De hecho el filtrado de datos en tiempo real hace que este dispositivo sea diferente a otros similares en el mercado. La empresa busca centros de investigación en el campo de agricultura/horticultura con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica, investigación y comercialización con asistencia técnica.

A Spanish SME developed a cheaper weighing lysimeter to measure the amount of evapotranspiration which is released by a crop in real time, improving then water management. Due to its small size and affordable cost, it is possible to install different lysimeters in a crop without any construction work. The company is looking for research organizations in the field of agriculture/horticulture for commercial agreements with technical assistance, technical cooperation and/or research cooperation.
Description:
A lysimeter is a device used for agronomic purposes to measure water volumes inputs and outputs in a container with an isolated volume of soil with a crop. There are different kinds of lysimeters depending on the methodology employed, e.g., volumetric, filler and weighing lysimeters, among others. By using a weighing lysimeters is possible to directly and exactly measure the water consumption of a crop as a mass balance. This fact allows water savings for irrigation because the adjusted water amount that a crop needs can be determined.

A conventional weighing lysimeter is a big container filled of soil with a crop on an industrial scale. The entire assembly is installed in a buried framework, where is possible to access for maintenance and calibration purposes. Its surface is on the level of the surrounding soil and is covered by the crop that is being measured. There are some limitations for this kind of lysimeter:
a) The necessary construction works are complex and expensive;
b) A great surface is occupied by these devices;
c) The maintenance work is difficult and laborious;
d) Automation is not included in the majority of these devices.
e) Most of the conventional lysimeters do not include a real-time data gathering.

The above-mentioned drawbacks makes that its use is restricted for most researching centres.

A Spanish company in the field of applications of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in environmental management, natural resources and agriculture has manufactured a weighing lysimeter that overcomes the above described disadvantages. This device allows to accurately determinate the water consumption in horticultural crops. Some of the main specifications of the device are the following:

- Range of the crop´s container: 0 - 600 g.
- Resolution: 50 g. This is equivalent to 0.1 mm of evapotranspiration.
- Precision of the measure in the container: ± 35 g.
- Measure range of the drainage tank: 0 - 10,000 g.
- Drainage tank resolution: 5 g.
- Precision of the measure in the drainage tank: ± 2 g.
- Time between readings: 2 s.
- Data acquisition frequency: every minute.
- Conditions of environmental temperature for good operation: 0 - 50 ºC.
- Power supply: 230 V.
- Real-time filtering data according to UNE 500540.
- External dimensions: 1020 mm x 520 mm x 1000 mm.

Additionally, its low cost compared with the conventional weighing lysimeters is another competitive advantage. This small size design makes unnecessary construction works, reducing consequently the final cost. For these reasons, it would be reasonable the installation of several lysimeters in the same crop for precisely comparing different irrigation treatments and controlling its variations. The data would be obtained and filtered in real-time. In fact, it is this real-time filtering data what makes this device different from similar ones in the market.

The main applications fields of this device are:
a) agricultural water management in plots and great extensions,
b) calculation of water balance in crops;
c) comparison of irrigation treatments in a crop; and
d) hydrological calculations

The SME´s target market are research organizations (Research centres/institutes and Universities) working on agricultural water management, irrigation and hydrology because they need low cost devices for precision, real time filtering and readings in their research tasks. For this reason, the Spanish company is mainly interested in commercial agreements but offering the research centres all the technical support needed for the management of the product. The company would be also open to technical cooperation to further develop their device. Finally, the SME would be glad to contribute with their expertise in joint research activities (e.g., Horizon 2020).

The most innovative aspect of this device is the capacity for filtering and reading data in real time.

While, the major advantages of this technology are:
- Ideal substitute for most precision lysimeters employed in research centres studying small-sized crop areas.
- Low cost: up to 4 times cheaper than current lysimeters in the market.
- Multi installation: Different lysimeters can be installed in a crop for controlling several treatments and variations.
