Biopolymer based material with tuneable functionalities
A Dutch SME develops and manufactures enhanced biomaterials for the medical device and cosmetics industry. Their core technology does allow to tune biomaterial to meet the final specifications required for a specific application.
The SME offers knowledge expertise on the development of biopolymers based materials and is also able to manufacture the desired material. The SME is looking for partners to operate under manufacturing-, research cooperation-, or technical cooperation agreements.
The Dutch SMA develops and supplies enhanced raw biomaterials for the medical device and cosmetics industry.

Biopolymers are used for various products and in many industries. They are popular because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. This company makes it possible to alter the functionality of these biomaterials. They have developed a platform technology which allows the conversion of biopolymers into well-defined spherical (submicron) particles.
With this technology the company controls the formation of these so called colloids in such a way that they can tune the characteristics (like the size and the density) of these spherical particles. These particles are the building blocks that form the substance and therefore, by tuning the primary particle characteristics, they can also influence the functional properties of the end-material.
The company has optimized their platform technology by processing different types, grades and sources of gelatin into Spherical Gelatin Particles (SGP-products). This process has been patented.
Next to gelatin, the platform technology enables the transformation of various other (bio)polymers like hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic Acid Submicron Pearls (HASP-Product), whey, zein, soy and polylactic acid. The sol, the colloidal suspension of the spherical particles, can be processed into several other biopolymer based forms like sponges, powders and gels. These forms all have tunable functionalities such as the degradation speed, viscosity and fluid absorption.
The biodegradable material manufactured by the company can be used for various applications. The spherical particles can be used as a delivery vehicle for pharmaceutical or cosmetic actives or serve as a scaffold for (stem) cells for regenerative medicine. The gel can be loaded with ceramics, antibiotics or a drug and works as a fluid carrier. The gelatin powder works as an absorbent and can be used as hemostats during general surgery and for dental applications. Our Hyaluronic Acid Submicron Pearls (HASP) currently find their application as a cosmetic ingredient.
The SME is looking for partners who are interested to use biopolymer based material in their medical device or cosmetic product.
Depending on the application different forms of cooperation can be envisaged:
- Research cooperation agreements for the exploration and development of novel materialproperties and applications
- Technical cooperation for the further development of specific material properties and applications

- Independent of the grade (food to medical) and source of the biopolymer (e.g. bovine, porcine and fish), the same high product quality is achieved; Together with a low particle size distribution (PDI <0.100) and the reproducibility of each batch this results in the guarantee that a product with a high quality standard is delivered.
- The platform technology also offers opportunities for the coating and encapsulation of different materials.
