Modern materials based on nickel in the hydrogen evolution reaction
Summary:
A university from North-East Poland has developed a method for producing carbon fiber composite, covered with ultra-thin coating of nickel. So formed fibers conduct electricity very well and can be used in production of hydrogen as a fuel for PEM fuel cells, or in technologies related with protection from electromagnetic interference. The university is interested in license agreement or research cooperation agreement.
Description:
The university from North-East Poland was founded in 1999. Now there are over 27.000 students that are educated at 17 faculties and 65 branches of study. The university´s department of chemistry provides a wide range of research from electrocoagulation of water, metal ions in biological systems up to ion selective electrodes.

Scientists from the department developed a method of continuous elektrodeposition of ultra-thin nickel film on the surface of carbon fibers. Product quality is tested by electrochemical methods (DC methods and impedance spectroscopy), and spectroscopic surface techniques (SEM, XRD, TGA, etc.). It is expected for this product to have following applications: cathodic protection of underground installation of steel or reinforced concrete, production of hydrogen as a fuel for PEM fuel cells (proton-exchange membrane) and in technologies related with protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI shielding).

The university is interested in license agreement or research cooperation agreement in order to use the research data in real life.
Advantages and Innovations:
The results of scientific research are possible to be used for corrosion protection in different regions. The composites of carbon fibers coated with nickel conduct electricity perfectly and due to their innovative nature create an oportunity to adjust them according to customer´s needs.
