Un instituto de investigación rumano ha desarrollado un método orgánico, complejo e integrado de biomonitorización de la calidad de cuencas hidrográficas. Este método monitorea los cambios ocurridos bajo la influencia de determinados factores antropogénicos. El método consiste en analizar la calidad de las cuencas hidrográficas desde el punto de vista químico (análisis químico del agua y sedimentos) y biológico (caracterización de la diversidad de sistemas ecológicos y de su dinámica en planes estructurales y funcionales), estudiando las comunidades de organismos que existen en la zona (expuestas a la contaminación por metales pesados) con el fin de preservar y rehabilitar los ecosistemas acuáticos afectados. El instituto busca socios académicos e industriales en el sector de evaluación de calidad y reconstrucción del medioambiente para desarrollar e implementar el método a gran escala.

A Romanian research institute has developed an organic, complex and integrated method of biomonitoring the hydrographical basins quality, refering to the occurred changes under the influence of various anthropogenic factors.
The Romanian research institute is looking for academic or/and industrial partner(s) in the field of quality assessment and reconstruction of the environment, for developing and implementing the method on a large-scale, under technical cooperation agreement.
Description:
The proposed biomonitoring method involves the assessment of the hydrographical basins quality both from a chemical point of view (water and sediment chemical analysis) and from a biological one (characterization of the ecological systems diversity and of their dynamics on structural and functional plans), by studying the communities of organisms existing in areas, exposed to heavy metal pollution, in the perspective of rehabilitation and preservation of the affected aquatic ecosystems.
The biomonitoring method of the hydrographical basins consists of the followings:
a) method of chemical evaluation (water and sediment) of the hydrographical basins quality;
b) method of water system monitoring;
c) monitoring method for assessing the breeding populations of the species having bioindicator value;
d) generic monitoring method for assessing the common bird species.
In order to assess the modification of the hydrographical basin quality, the following steps should be followed:
1. Forming assumptions regarding the contamination;
2. Developing a sampling plan, type and number of chemical and biological analysis;
3. Conducting a chemical and biological analysis;
4. Interpreting and combining results for the assessment of the hydrographical basin quality. The results will be correlated with the conditions imposed by Directive 2000/60 EC;
5. Drawing up GIS maps. The sampling and processing methods of the biological samples fall strictly into the standard methods category, widely accepted all over the world in biomonitoring water quality.
Advantages and Innovations:
As compared to the presently used system, comprising 7 classes (used in Romania as well before applying the EU Water Directive), the proposed method is working with only 5 quality classes, according to the EC recommendations. The quality categories of water correspond with the integrated monitoring recommendations and ecological quality classification of surface waters in EU and refer to:
1. excellent ecological quality: the human impact upon communities is minimal or absent. Both nature (composition and diversity) and ecological capacity (productivity) of the ecological community reflect that they are in natural relations with their unaffected habitats;
2. good ecological quality: the human impact detected upon communities and habitats is low. Biota and communities show signs of anthropical stress, but natural purification processes are functional. The communities differ slightly from the community habitats found in their natural state;
3. mediocre ecological quality: the human impact is evident upon the community and natural habitats. Biota reflect moderate qualitative and quantitative deviations from the natural situation;
4. poor ecological quality: the human impact is significant upon the community and habitat. The communities distinctly differ from those formed by the natural ones, determined by disturbing factors;
5. unsatisfactory ecological quality: only a few species are present, having high ecological tolerance or, in some systematic groups, the species completely lack.
The use of the proposed method for assessing the water quality, based on the identification of macrozoobenthos species, may lead to the establishement of some distinctive areas, as it follows:
- natural or almost natural areas (ecological category 1);
- partly natural ones (ecological quality 2);
- mediocre affected or artificial ones (ecological quality 3);
- seriously affected ones (ecological quality 4);
- totally destroyed areas (ecological quality 5).
