Una universidad española ha desarrollado un nuevo método de producción de dos compuestos diferentes: polihidroxialcanoatos (PHA, un poliéster biodegradable) y ectoína (ingrediente activo para cosmética) durante el proceso de fermentación de grano de cereal. Este método se integra fácilmente en biorrefinerías para complementar la producción de biocombustible. El método se basa en el uso de una bacteria halófila que se somete a un proceso simultáneo de sacarificación y fermentación. El material obtenido se procesa para obtener PHA y ectoína. El sistema ha sido probado en un reactor a escala de banco de 2 L, con una producción de 25g/l de PHA y 4g/l de ectoína. La universidad busca socios industriales con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

Description:
The invention developed by the Spanish university comprises a method for producing PHA (a biodegradable polyester) and ectoine from a low cost substrate, such as cereal grain.
The method is based on the use of a halophilic bacterium which is subjected to a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process. After this process the resulting material is processed in order to obtain PHA and ectoine. The system was tested in a bench scale reactor of 2 L, obtaining a production of 25g/l of PHA and 4g/l of ectoine.

According to some studies there are more than 270.000 tons of plastic in oceans causing an important environmental impact. The general use of biodegradable polyesters, like the PHA produced by this technology, could help to solve the problem.
Ectoine, the other compound produced by this new method has received an increased attention since it can be used as active ingredient in the cosmetic field for skin care and sun protection products.

The method can be easily integrated in a biorefinery to complement the production of biofuel.

The University is looking for industrial partners that could develop the technology at industrial scale interested in a license agreement.
