Un instituto de investigación polaco que trabaja en el campo de tecnologías para la madera ha desarrollado una nueva tecnología para proteger madera contrachapada contra hongos, humedad y moho. Esta tecnología se basa en líquidos iónicos disueltos en resinas de condensación quimio y termoestables y se utiliza especialmente en condiciones con un alto nivel de humedad en las que la madera contrachapada experimenta un proceso de deterioro biológico causado por microorganismos. La tecnología ha sido probada en laboratorio y su eficacia ha sido demostrada en especies seleccionadas de hongos en madera contrachapada. El instituto busca socios interesados en continuar con el desarrollo e implementar la tecnología en Europa. El objetivo es establecer acuerdos de licencia.

A Polish research institute working on wood technologies has developed an innovative technology that helps to protect plywood against fungi and by extension against moisture and mould. The technology is based on ionic liquids and was developed as a laboratory tested method of plywood protection. The institute is looking for foreign technology or business partners to further develop the technology and implement it on the European market. The desired type of agreement is licence.
Description:
The Polish research institute working on wood technologies is a national leader in the development of various wood-related technologies. A team of scientist working in the Institute has developed an innovative technology in the form of a method of plywood protection against fungi and by extension against moisture and mould.
This method can be used particularly in high-moisture conditions where plywood undergoes the process of biological decay because of microorganisms. Fungi can cause surface discoloration and wood decay. For these reasons plywood protection is applied according to specific application, e.g. transport, construction, furniture, boatbuilding and railway industry.
The method was created with an effective and safe way of plywood protection in mind. Therefore the method was built around the use of agents safe for humans and the environment.
The technology is using of ionic liquids, dissolved in chemo- and thermosetting condensation resins.
Plywood protected by this method is characterised by high resistance to mould fungi and decay fungi, while not influencing bonding quality and hygiene properties.
The technology was laboratory tested and its effectiveness was proven on selected species of fungi on plywood.
The Institute is now willing to introduce this technology to the market. Therefore the Institute is now looking for industrial partners from plywood industry and partners with appropriate laboratory equipment, team and experience in research and development of new agents and chemical products for plywood protection and plywood preservation. The desired type of agreement is a non-exclusive license. The desired type of cooperation is further development of the technology to the industrial scale and introduction of the product on the international scale.
Advantages and Innovations:
The technology is characterized by the following advantages:
- enhanced aesthetics and better physical and mechanical properties of plywood, such as modulus of elasticity, hardness ensuring a high-quality assembly and hygiene properties, as well as improved dimensional stability of plywood and resistance to visible radiation and ultraviolet,
- technology allows elimination of wood-protecting agents dangerous to humans, i.e. inorganic salts, compounds containing copper, chromium and arsenic; aromatic organic compounds with chlorine (e.g. pentachlorophenol); tar derivatives (e.g. creosote oil); quaternary salts containing a chloride anion (some of them emit highly toxic dioxins when plywood is being burnt)
- plywood protection method can be applied using gluing rollers within one plywood production line, thereby eliminating possible complications of other, available veneer protecting methods.

The partner should have appropriate experience, scientific team and laboratory equipment allowing further development of the technology to the industrial scale and appropriate experience, skills and possibilities to introduce the final product on the international scale. Experience in introduction of similar products on the international market is essential. The other type of desired partner is a company from the plywood industry for the method of protection plywood can be used as an additional process in plywood production.

The role of the partner is to further develop the technology to the industrial scale and introduce it internationally.
