Summary:
An Estonian university is offering an innovative way to precisely timestamp image streams. The main advantage -Y- innovation is based on the use of low-cost and precise Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for highly precise time-stamping of images that can be used for different types of high-speed and high-accuracy 2D and 3D imaging-based measurements.
Industry partners are sought for commercial and/or technical agreements or as licensees.
Description:
The offered technology has been developed by an Estonian university with a strong scientific background in sensor signal processing.
The synchronization of the image streams that are being used for the measurements of static 3D objects (like high-speed measured profiles of the pavement of roads) or dynamic objects (for example vibration of large structures, like ships and wind-turbines) is today costly and requires special sophisticated hardware and wires.
The developed technology requires nether special hardware nor synchronization wires to conduct various types of high-speed and high-accuracy 2D and 3D imaging-based measurements. Offered technology is suitable for:
- real-time measurement of the road (pavement) surfaces,
vibration analysis of the mechanical structures (wind-turbine blades and towers),
- composite boat sections, etc.

Working principle:
The proposed solution is using specially modulated light, in the view area of the camera. The modulated light is synchronized by "absolute time source", e.g. GNSS system, controller and its pulse-per-second signal. Adjusting in the similar way several cameras through the global GNSS system enables the cameras easily, precisely and cost-effectively to be synchronized to the absolute time and therefore to each other. Also, having the precise timestamps and the GNSS (e.g. GPS) messages available, the location information can be added to each image frame.

The objective of the technology offer is to apply and/or improve the developed technology with possible partners who are looking for an efficient way to conduct high-speed and high-accuracy 2D and 3D imaging-based measurements in any of the mentioned or new fields. Commercial agreement with technical assistance, license agreement or technical cooperation agreement is sought for that end. Prototypes is available for demonstration on demand.
Advantages and Innovations:
Offered technology includes several advantages compared to alternative solutions:
- Use of absolute time or other light source for synchronization enables the "stamping" of the images in simpler and also precise way. The accuracy of timestamps (synchronization) can be in the order of 1 ms or even better.
- No need for special hardware or wires for synchronization.
- Wide implementation area. Implementation area depends on the number of simultaneously working cameras (1 or more) and the number of needed synchronization light sources (1 or more).
