The presence of these bacteria in food, especially chicken, is taken very seriously by international organizations and national organisation, who have worked to reduce campylobacteriosis in humans. The university is looking for industrial partners to further develop the test and bring it to market under licensing, research and technical cooperation agreements.
Description:
The research carried out so far has made it possible to design and test pairs of primers and a DNA probe to detect the presence of Campylobacter species (Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari subsp. lari and C. upsaliensis). The efficacy of the primers and the probe in detecting the bacteria has been verified, using techniques such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and dot blot on DNA extracted from pre-treated, packaged chicken thighs available in supermarkets.
The analytical kit remains to be developed.
The reference market is that of Food Safety Testing, especially molecular diagnostics for the food industry. The presence of these bacteria in food, especially chicken, is taken very seriously by international organizations such as WHO (World Health Orgnization) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), which for many years have worked together with their national counterparts to reduce campylobacteriosis in humans. With over 220,000 cases reported (European Food Safety Authority - EFSA data for 2011), this disease is the most frequent food-borne zoonosis in the European Union. It is estimated that the actual number of cases is around nine million a year. The bacteria cause gastroenteritis with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever, and in the most serious cases can bring about a form of autoimmune neuropathy.
The research team is looking for industrial partners to further develop the technology and bringing it to market, starting from development of the analytical kit to industrialisation of the new solution. Potential collaboration considered would be within License and/or Research and Technical cooperation agreement.
Advantages and Innovations:
The main advantage lies in the specificity of the primer and probe that have been developed, which would enable the development of diagnostic kits that are simpler, faster, and more effective than those that are currently available on the market.
Compared to classical microbiology methods, the proposed methodology is more sensitive, faster, and simpler. Compared to immunoenzymatic assays, the main advantage of the new method lies in its greater specificity.
The main potential clients for the new product include manufacturers of diagnostic systems. This market is international in scope, highly competitive, and includes a number of large firms.
