They have now methodology for detecting the position of an implanted artificial joint and allowing for correction by adjustable implants in order to ensure that the position of the artificial joint matches that of a natural joint. The University is looking for financial agreements with industrial and research cooperation with academic or industrial partners.
Description:
2005-2007 was the start for the development of a methodology based on walking measurements and computer simulation results to determine how precisely the implanted artificial joint matches the position of the replaced (natural) joint and evaluate the change of the position of the joint (its direction and size) in relation to the position of the previous natural joint. The basis of the methodology - a comparative analysis of human movement (walking) performed on the basis of experimental and calculated research data. The effect of the operation on a person is determined by comparing his movement parameters, recorded using a 3D motion measurement and analysis system (MoCap), with the same parameters after the operation (which requires regular measurement of each of the movement parameters and storage in databases). By taking into account movement changes and calculated information on changes in muscle activity after replacing the joint with an artificial one, it is possible to ensure that a position matching that of a natural joint is achieved without taking apart elements of the newly implanted joint.
Advantages and Innovations:
Both various non-invasive measurements and computer modelling of a human are usually used for the monitoring of human condition and diagnostics or the preparation (planning) of a joint replacement surgery The proposed methodology allows to assess the the effects of the joint replacement surgery and after developing adjustable joint implants - to relatively easily restore patient´s locomotion apparatus to its original position (before the surgery), thus maximising patient´s working capacity or simply ensuring maximum living comfort.
Technological readiness level: Single-person walking measurement 3D moCap and muscle activity simulation system MSA/ADAMS+Figure (LifeModeler). Preliminary research on the impact of the (spherical) centre of the hip joint on walking parameters, which confirmed the viability of the methodology.
