Este sistema permite la liberación progresiva y eficiente de los inhibidores. La metodología se utiliza para proteger diferentes materiales para la construcción, como pinturas, revestimientos y estructuras de hormigón especialmente reforzadas, contra la corrosión. La tecnología utiliza resinas procedentes de fuentes naturales para obtener una capa uniforme, delgada y porosa. Este revestimiento confiere una gran resistencia contra los daños causados durante procesos de manipulación y almacenamiento, así como una gran estabilidad una vez incorporado en la mezcla de hormigón. Se buscan socios en las industrias de la construcción, revestimientos y aditivos con el fin de licenciar la patente.

Summary:
A Spanish Research Institution has developed microcapsules that contain corrosion inhibitors coated by a resin. This system allows the progressive and efficient release of the inhibitors. Using this methodology, different construction materials such as paint, coatings, and especially reinforced concrete structures (RCS) can be protected against corrosion. Industrial partners from the construction, coatings and additives industry are sought to collaborate through a patent licence agreement.
Description:
The use of corrosion inhibitors is one of the most efficient protection methods to prevent corrosion and increase reinforced concrete structures´ (RCS) service life. However, these compounds are needed in high quantities. Besides the large economic cost, there is an environmental cost due to the contaminant nature of these compounds. The main advantage of microencapsulation in natural resins is its environmental compatibility, compared to others coatings.

The developed technology uses resins from natural sources in order to obtain a uniform, thin and porous layer. This coating layer provides high resistance to the damage suffered during handling and storage processes, as well as high stability once incorporated to the concrete mixture. The resin is not soluble in water (due to its hydrophobic nature), which avoids lixiviation of the encapsulated inhibitor found inside during kneading, drying and hardening of concrete.

This resin coats a core which contains corrosion inhibitors (chosen between combinations of hydroxides and nitrites from different metals), forming the microcapsule. It has an intelligent controlled release: the release of the corrosion inhibitors starts with the beginning of corrosion symptoms, not in the first stages. The microcapsule releases the inhibitor according to the pH of the surroundings and the presence of aggressive agents involved in the corrosion process, such as chlorides and carbonates.

This technology could be used by companies which manufacture construction materials, such as for example concrete, paintings and coatings among others.
