This R-Y-D institute is seeking partners to enter into technical cooperation agreement to help them test and validate the methods.
Description:
The university medical school, based in the North of England and respected throughout the medical community has developed an in-vitro model that can be used for the screening, development and testing of oral formulations.

For effective oral delivery of a medicine, a compound must be able to withstand the three major barriers present in the human mouth: the digestive barrier, the mucus barrier and the epithelial barrier.

This model, unlike currently available in-vitro models, has developed a way of integrating all three barriers into one system by creating a system that purifies and rebuilds the mucus system which would normally die quickly in an in-vitro environment. This system also means that the mucus is such that the effect of digestive secretions can be monitored on a drug delivery system therefore replicating the conditions inside the mouth very accurately.

The university is currently in the process of developing and validating the model and is looking for companies needing to test oral medicines who will provide compounds for testing and validation and will give advice on the final design of the model.

Advantages and Innovations:
The model is the first system to be able to integrate the three major barriers that oral delivery must overcome as well as the effect of digestive secretions.

The model will be able to develop and improve oral formulation design and flag up which drugs should not be tested on humans and animals making medical trials safer and more effective.

Non-invasive oral delivery is the most favoured route of drug administration and is especially useful in paediatric, geriatric and emerging markets. This system encourages and improves the accuracy of non-invasive oral delivery.

It will allow the scientific community to screen and test a wider range of formulations and concepts without having the expense and risk of medical trials.

Applying the same approach to the mucus problem means that they will be also able to develop nasal and gastric models.
