Una empresa estonia especializada en almacenaje ha desarrollado un nuevo sistema automático de gestión de almacenes que ahorra tiempo y costes. Se trata de un escáner de visión artificial totalmente automático, muy preciso y con un tiempo rápido de respuesta que se utiliza para manejar y contabilizar mercancías. La principal ventaja económica es la reducción de errores en el conteo de mercancías, evitando multas y gastos adicionales. La tecnología resuelve tres importantes problemas de las soluciones actuales: 1) manejo ineficaz de cargas a granel, 2) alto coste de integración de los sistemas de automatización de almacenes y 3) seguridad de los trabajadores y riesgos para la salud. Se buscan empresas del sector de transporte y logística con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.


Independent smart machine-vision based cargo counting module
An Estonian company specialized in storage and warehousing has developed a new time-and cost effective automated system of warehouse management. The solution is a fully automatic, high-accuracy, fast-response machine-vision based scanner for handling and counting of cargo. The main economic benefit is minimising of cargo counting errors which result in fines and other additional expenses. Licence agreement with other companies in the transport and logistics sector is in sought.
The core business of the Estonian SME is storage and warehousing, handling of all types of cargo, loading and discharge services, distribution and forwarding. Company offers integrated logistics solutions optimized with the use of modern warehousing facilities, highly efficient equipment and machinery. SME´s innovation is focusing on improving cargo handling accuracy and speed to meet the highest standards of the growing industry.
Current warehouse automation systems tend to be very complex, require high-investments and are suitable for large companies that are handling large quantities of similar cargo. The offered technology enables to overcome three main problems with existing technologies in logistics sector: 1) ineffective neo-bulk cargo handling; 2) high-cost of warehouse automation systems integration and; 3) workers safety and health risks.
The SME-s core innovation appears in combing unique set of different technologies into one key market application. Smart counter module can be taught to distinguish the quantity and various characteristics (shape, colour, specific marks etc.) of the goods like a human eye does.
The aim of the offered technology is to replace the current manual counting procedure with fully automatic method that would:
- eliminate cargo counting errors
- improve handling time
- enable cost-effective automation of cargo handling processes
- improve workers´ safety.
The work principle of the innovation is based on the combination of 2D and 3D machine vision, that enables to achieve very high-accuracy and broad scale of object recognition compared to alternative solutions.
The smart machine-vision system is installed on the forklift where the vision algorithm is combined with the "deep learning" neural network algorithm. Machine vision system consists of several cameras and an image processing and analysing unit built as an independent module which could be installed on most of standard forklifts.
Forklift is equipped with a set of cameras and lighting system for having images from the top and sides of the loading of the goods. The cameras are incorporated into a computerized module capable of calculating the descriptors of the images taken by the module cameras. The module is equipped with WiFi communication unit to connect to the warehouse network. The end-user will use its central computer/server for processing the images of all the goods to calculate specific local and global descriptors of each type of the goods (packet). For the analysis and classification the "deep learning" neural network algorithm is used, which enables fast and reliable results and allows the central computer to learn during the logistics operations even better. The novelty of the solution comes from a new approach which enables to take the images from different angles. Therefore, the new technology avoids sending pictorial information, which could require high bandwidth and lot of time.

The technology is currently under development. The Estonian company is looking for partners to cooperate with via license agreement (a transfer of rights in return for a fee). Proposed technology can be easily integrated with existing warehouse equipment making it affordable and cost-effective solution for even smaller companies.
