Details

Tittle:
Neutron monitor for pulsed radiation fields
Summary:
A German research institute has developed a dosimeter, an electronic radiation meter with high isotropy, low dead time and thus high metrological quality for pulsed neutron fields which enables measurements of pulsed radiation fields, as they occur in basic research, synchrotron radiation or medical accelerators, which pose new challenges to dosimetry. The research institute is searching for licensees.
Description:
The well-known German research institute is highly experienced in exploring, developing and producing various kinds of technology solutions. They are now offering a solution to improve dosimetry in all types of pulsed, mixed n°/¿ radiation fields. Pulsed radiation fields, occurring in basic research, synchroton radiation as well as medical accelerators, are posing new challenges for dosimetry. The institute´s solution consists of a dosimeter, which is an electronic radiometer, providing high isotropy, low dead time and thus metrological excellence for pulsed neutron fields.

Technical Description

Measuring the exact dose of pulsed neutron radiation is a particularly demanding task since high radiation densities occuring during the pulse lead to a saturation of the detectors. This, in turn, leads to an underestimation of this type of radiation that exhibits high biological effectiveness - which is obviously an extremely undesirable effect in radiation protection. Furthermore, clean discrimination against ¿-radiation is necessary to determine the total biological effectiveness of both types of radiation.
The solution offered by the German research institute consists of four semiconductor-based detector modules which enable radiation discrimination due to the appropriate selection of neutron-activatable and only poorly neutron-activatable substances.
Only by using semiconductor detectors does it become possible to set a threshold for ¿-discrimination. Covering these 2 x 2 semiconductor detectors with specially selected metal sheets allows n°/¿-discrimination; furthermore, due to the type of alloy chosen, activation is shifted into the range of seconds which is relevant for the direct-reading dosemeter. Screening is weak and leads to radiation measurements exhibiting improved isotropy. This system thus represents a small, direct-reading sensor which can easily be placed in the center of the moderator depicted here (see figure). The offered solution is suitable for improving dosimetry in all types of pulsed, mixed n°/¿ radiation fields.

Economic Significance

Electron synchrotrons, but also accelerators for elementary particles and ions are playing an increasingly important role in therapy, materials analysis and materials activation as well as in lithography. If their secondary radiation contains neutrons, measuring the correct dose ot these neutrons gains in importance.
The research institute is searching for licensees.
