The client is an Italian University Laboratory, infrastructure for interdisciplinary research in the areas of electronic device modeling, nanosystems, microsystems and ICT. Research activities are focused on non-pharmacological homecare therapies for treatment of disorders associated with abnormal behaviour of the central nervous system.

Biopotential acquisition systems (measuring medical revealing electrical spikes in patients) are generally too expensive to reach an audience outside clinics and large research facilities, with costs in the range of several hundred euros per channel. The Italian laboratory has developed a complete, cost-effective, quick-setup electroencephalography (EEG) platform based on Arduino-family boards. The platform´s performances are comparable to those of clinical systems, expandable up to 128 channels with sampling rate up to 1KS/s.
The platform comes with stand-alone software for data acquisition, visualization and processing. Libraries for tools and softwares interfaces commonly used in research environments are also available. Low-cost dry electrodes to complete the product are currently being developed.
The product can be used in public and private environments since it is configured with an open source system, which entails low maintenance costs and user-friendliness for homecare therapies and monitoring.
The laboratory is looking for nvestors for financing product industrialization, industries and SMEs, operating in the electrocardiography field, interested in technology transfer and distributors.
Advantages and Innovations:
- The production cost for the new developed system is less than 10-Y-euro; per channel, leading to a sale price which can be at least one order of magnitude lower than those available on the market. This allows to expand the potential market to several smaller entities, from secondary schools, to university graduate courses, small research laboratories and provate citizens.
- With respect to low-cost EEG systems currently available on the market, the performances of the product developed are significantly higher, with much higher flexibility and customization possibilities.
