How it works
Its shape, the dodecagon, ideally serves the docking of 12-24 yachts; each of them should have approximately a maximum length of 18m. It is ensured that docking is performed easily and safely, minimizing the possibilities of an accident, since its shape and dimensions facilitate yachts´ passages and movements. Mooring spots can be booked through an application (smartphone - web application) or by SMS-phone call. Finally, a navigation light identifies the direction that yachts should follow.

The solution to the problem
Greece has the longest coastline in Europe (16,500 km) and more than 2,500 islands and islets. Its "user friendly" seas draw visitors from across the globe, who enjoy an exceptional diversity of beaches, islands and mainland villages. This should be its advantage for development, in order jobs and more revenue to be created.

The most feasible way to anchor a vessel in Greece is in a marina. However, finding a free berth in a marina, especially in a tourist area during the summer, is not always possible. There are tourists, who occasionally choose to anchor in open sea in various bays for freedom and privacy, but for those who do not, an unavailable berth is an obstacle that forces them to follow this option which in the case of high winds makes an overnight stay difficult or even impossible. Moreover, when anchoring in open sea it is easy for a serious accident to happen, such as the boat colliding with rocks or to another boat or getting stranded in shallow water at the time of anchoring.

The existing berths in marinas of both Greek islands in the Aegean and Ionian Sea are not sufficient to cover tourism needs, especially during the summer months. This is a limiting factor for the increasing number of tourists who make repeat visits. Greece has the lowest average berths from all countries (0.5 per kilometer of coastline in Greece compared to 8.9 in the other Mediterranean countries of the EU). Just by bringing the Greek figure up to the European average would correspond to 142,000 berths with similar benefits in jobs and revenue.

This project can be considered as a small floating marina which actually does not replace existing marinas but complements them because these floating moors would be providing additional berths that are unavailable in high season. It would give tourists from all over the world extra incentive to explore Greece by yachting in the summer. Currently, tourists with safety concerns (such a high winds - a regular concern for sailors among the Greek islands tend to choose alternative destinations such as Turkey or Croatia, where yachts are better catered for.

Required Capital
Time and money are required to invest in the necessary R-Y-D to investigate all the relevant construction stages, methods, materials and costs.

It has been estimated that the R-Y-D period will last about two years (at least twenty months) and cost approximately -Y-euro;1.2 mn - an amount that would be absorbed within the first few years of production. Due to the project´s highly innovative nature, it might be necessary to construct and test more than one prototype. This would raise the final cost, which would mainly cover expenses for the studies, the licenses, the promotion and the coworkers´ remunerations.
Advantages and Innovations:
-The deployment of the floating structures is performed quickly and can be completely removed or reinstalled without affecting the sea eco-system.
-It is a sustainable energy and an environmentally friendly structure, causes minor atmosphere pollution and no sea pollution.
-It is not necessary the existence of a port project making it functionally independent and autonomous, without having any extraneous or non-land factor for power or water supply and other services.
-It has lower manufacturing costs, compared with a marina of a respective capacity.
-It can be installed in areas where it would be unfeasible to construct any port structure either due to increased financial costs or unfavorable environmental conditions.
-The construction can be dispersed throughout country´s shipyards with the possibility of expansion in the Mediterranean.
-Vessels and crews are protected since anchoring is held safely.
-There are provided services that meet the modern needs, such as water supply through a desalination system and energy supply for vessels´ needs.
-There is a self-serviced digital info-kiosk with many applications and accesses (e.g. comprehensive information guide, local maps, weather forecast, emergency calls, Wi-Fi Hotspot and system for charging credit and debit cards).
-It is anticipated that the structure can be equipped with a CPR device and an oxygen flask for serious emergency situations.
-There is the provision of a smartphone-web application, which helps the users even to book a mooring spot.
-Swimmers´, tourists´ and inhabitants activities are not affected.
-It increases the incoming traffic of tourists, attraction and rental of pleasure yachts, revenues for local communities and creates new employment positions.
-It can be tailor-made (e.g. for a hotel) in order to be adapted to the preferable needs.
-It is the solution to the problem supports and upgrades maritime tourism.
