Cuando se cambia la composición del poliuretano curado por UV, pueden incluirse una variedad de aditivos en función de la aplicación: colorantes, inhibidores de la corrosión, catalizadores, biocidas, compuestos de cambio de fase, etc. También puede modificarse la estructura de las nanoesferas, ofreciendo la posibilidad de utilizarlas, por ejemplo, para la liberación controlada de los aditivos incorporados. Description:
A Belgian multinational, active in the chemical sector, has developed a new process to produce nanospheres. Water based dispersions of photoreactive reactive polyurethane colloids are UV-cured in the water phase to result in internally crosslinked nanospheres. When changing the composition of the UV-curable polyurethane, a variation of additives (eg dyes, corrosion inhibitors, catalysts, biocides, phase-change compounds, anti-fouling agents, hydrophobicity modifiers, freezing depressors and flame retardants) can be included specific for the application that is envisaged. The structure of the nanospheres can also be modified, which gives eg the possibility to use them for controlled release of the incorporated additives.
A possible field of application is for nanoparticle-modified coatings, whereby the dispersion of the UV-crosslinked particles can be added to any water based polymer, resulting in improved scratch and abrasion properties. The advantage of this technology is that the nanoparticles can be used as a safe, in-situ produced dispersion without the need of handling dry nanoparticles, which has become problematic because of occupational health issues. The nanoparticles can be used to add functional properties to coatings while maintaining a high level of optical clarity due to the submicron particle size.
Applications could be found in coating resins for automotive, plastics, wood, glass, paper, concrete, inks ...
