Antimicrobial SiO2 nanoparticles
Summary:
A German university has developed a process to coat SiO2 nanoparticles so that they can be used in antimicrobial coatings. These new coatings are contact active and have special advantages in sanitary applications or in areas where children play. Industrial licensees are sought to explore applications.
Description:
A German university has managed to coat SiO2 nanoparticles all around with biocidal quaternary ammonium silanes in such a way that the biocidal moiety points always outwards. These nanoparticles can be deposited on a surface from a dispersion of a simple solvent (for example alcohol). The surface coating thus formed acts purely contact actively antimicrobial. That means, when touching, no toxic substances go over to the contacting body.

The new SiO2 nanoparticles are suitable for antimicrobial coatings especially in sanitary and wet areas, such as, silicone joints coatings. However, in general , all surfaces can be coated with them.
Due to the exclusive contact active mode of operation, they are adequate for areas where children play or stay.

A further interesting potential application field is in air conditioning and air filtration systems. Here the formation of mold and biofilms is prevented.

The coated surfaces also have an additional high water-repellent and/or dirt-repellent effect.

Industrial licensees are sought to explore applications. Partners could be from the areas of medical technology, smart materials, construction, coatings, ventilation systems, sanitary devices and others.
Advantages and Innovations:
For the first time nanoparticles have been coated all around in the way described. This results in improved characteristics, such as:

- Surfaces are purely contact actively antimicrobial
- Dirt-repellent properties
- Mold-preventing properties
Stage of Development:
Available for demonstration
