Details

Tittle:
Nano-particulate solid for water disinfection.
Summary:
A Spanish public research organisation has developed a solid photocatalyst with biocide activity that can be used for water disinfection. The main difference with other photocatalysts is the ability to be activated by a wide spectrum of radiation which goes from infrared to ultraviolet; making possible the use of solar light for its activation. An industrial partner interested in manufacturing this solid under a license agreement, for application in water treatment plants, is sought.
Description:
Water disinfection systems are necessary for its purification and use in various fields such as agriculture or human consumption. In this context, the use of solid photocatalysts, which avoids the addition of chemicals, is a green and safe alternative. However, these photocatalysts use ultraviolet (UV) light, which leads to the need to find new systems that allow the efficient use of the entire spectrum of radiation, from UV to infrared, for its use as a biocide in an effective and fast way, with low cost. Furthermore, it is of particularly interest to find these kinds of systems for being used in biological cleaning of water.
The invention is related to a nano-particulate biocide system; based on multicationic doping of titanium dioxide (TiO2); with, at least, two combined cations; for the use of the UV, visible and infrared radiation as energetic source or the process. Consequently, its biocide activity can be optimized from wavelengths of 280 nm to 950 nm.
Disinfection assays were carried out with this system, using E. coli and S. aureus as "model" microorganisms, showing an improved biocide capacity compared to the TiO2 and being able to decrease the bacterial concentration from 9 Log UFC/ml hasta 6,5 Log UFC/ml in 60 min.
The Spanish Research Center is looking for companies interested the manufacture of this photocatalyst, under a patent license agreement, for being used in water purification processes. However, material has only been tested at a laboratory scale and the material has only been synthetized at this scale. Therefore, some further development might be needed before reaching an industrial use and the Spanish research centre could collaborate with the company in that project.
The Spanish public entity has a broad experience in research and development of novel materials with several innovative and industrial applications. Some of them are now being used in Spanish and foreign companies.

Advantages and Innovations:
- The photoactive solid avoids the addition of chemical disinfectants to the water.
- The catalyst can be use in an effective way using all the wavelengths of the solar light, as energetic source.
- The solid can be reused in multiple cleaning cycles.
- The method of synthesis for the nano-particles is simple and can be adapted to an industrial scale.
