A UK marine research technology centre has developed a novel compact LED beacon that provides a bright flashing light to aid the location and recovery of equipment at night. The beacon is submersible to 1000m and automatically switches off below 20m depth. The centre is seeking partners working in lighting or marine technology to manufacture the beacon under license.
Description:
This battery powered, compact, lightweight LED beacon provides a bright flashing light to aid the location and recovery of equipment at night. The beacon may be fitted with LEDs of various colours and the flash sequence may be selected via soldered links on the main PCB (printed circuit board).

The beacon is fully watertight and submersible to 1000m. A pressure switch in the base will switch the beacon off once submerged beyond approximately 20m.

Powered by four standard alkaline AA 1.5V batteries, the beacon will operate for a minimum of 120 hours depending on the flash sequence selected.

The centre is seeking companies working in marine technology who might be able to adapt or employ the lights to their existing equipment to aid recovery, for manufacturing agreements under license.
Advantages and Innovations:
The beacon is applicable to submersible equipment which needs to be easily locatable on surfacing, when the beacon will automatically start flashing. It is well proven and has been successfully deployed many times as part of a system exploring the impact of carbon on the submersion of biological items as well as on the centre´s floating sediment trap, where it has greatly eased recovery not only at night but also in daylight.

The LED beacon is controlled by a PIC controller. On power-up, the PIC can be programmed to four individual pre-programmed LED flash options, depending on the soldered jumper links on the pcb.

A voltage regulator allows a steady supply to the PIC controller and maintains a constant brightness from the flash LED´s at mean cell voltages down to 0.85V.

The voltage regulator is controlled by a micro switch linked to a pressure sensor which only becomes active at depths less than around 20m.
Battery condition is constantly monitored and visually indicated by a separate led which flashes with a varying intensity and duty cycle as the
battery voltage deteriorates.

The beacon operation uses four AA alkaline batteries continues down to 3.4v, and allows 120 hours continuous use on the maximum flash setting.
