The current tool was tested as an off-line software and is being re-engineered for real-time processing. The research team is looking for industrial partners for further development, testing and industrialization of the technology within research, technical or license agreement.
Description:
A Computer Science research team from an Italian university developed a novel technology for medical diagnosis of voice disorders, originated by various causes: from improper use of vocal cords to allergies and laryngeal cancer.
The novel interactive diagnostic instrument can be used for the real-time analysis of acoustic and visual data related to the vocal tract and for assessing phonation quality in patients. The solution relies on high velocity video endoscopy and videokymographic techniques. It allows to characterize the phonation process at several levels, with reference to both the acoustic and physiological parameters of the vocal chords.
The related models and procedures were developed as software programmes operating offline using pre-registered data, and completing the project requires software re-engineering and interfacing with data acquisition devices for real-time processing.
The potential clients of the technology include companies and health care facilities active in the following fields:
- diagnostics in otorhinolaryngology
- rehabilitation of post-surgery patients
- vocal training or speech therapy to treat dysphonia.
The research team is currently looking for industrial partners for further development and testing the technolgy with real-time data and subsequent industrialization activities. Depending on the partners´ expertise and interest license agreements, research or technical cooperation agreements would be considered.
Advantages and Innovations:
The new technology uses dynamic models to simultaneously interpret video and audio data; this is something that currently available technologies - Multidimensional Voice Program (MDVP) and videokymography (VKG) - are able to do, but not at the same time. It is also provides more accurate and detailed results compared to MDVP methodology.
The new technology has the capability of being integrated and compared with traditional diagnostic technologies to achieve more reliable diagnoses by limiting erroneous evaluations.
