Novel continuous passive motion machine
Summary:
A team of German scientists developed a novel continuous passive motion machine (CPM) that can be used for a combined active and passive mobilization of the knee joint and also of the hip joint after an accident or a surgical intervention. Research cooperation agreement or license agreement is offered.
Description:
In the postoperative rehabilitation to re-cover the functionality of the hip or knee joint the use of a continuous passive motion splint has been established in combination with manual physiotherapy measures. After an operation the early movement of the affected joints can be ensured by the use of a Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) machine. The therapy with a CPM machine is leading to a reduction in the degradation processes of affected muscles (atrophy) as well as to a reduced hardening of the joint after an accident or an operation. At the same time the healing process of the active and passive joint structures should be improved by the early movement in order to increase or to rehabilitate the functionality of the limb system.

Established CPM machines are usually devices which have been designed for the flexion of the knee joint. But they are often also used for a mobilization of the hip joint. Therefore, the movement of the hip joint is not optimally and an exercising of hip abduction and adduction is not possible. Another problem is the lack of a combined passive and active movement therapy.

These disadvantages are eliminated by the offered CPM machine that was developed by a team of German scientists. The novel CPM machine allows both, the training of the knee hip and an improved exercising of the hip joint as well as the possibility of the combination of active and passive movement therapy. By integrating an additional axis of motion hip abduction and adduction as well as hip flexion and extension are possible. All motion opportunities can be executed as a separate motion as well as a combined motion. Due to an integrated sensor system a continuous monitoring of the therapy is possible. This allows a patient-specific treatment. The training intensity can be progressively adapted to the load limit and to the daily condition of the patient. Furthermore, the offered CPM machine is mobile and easy to install at the bed of the patient.

The scientists are looking for manufacturers of therapy or training devices for the medical rehabilitation who are interested in transferring the concept into a marketable product on the basis of a license agreement.
As a second cooperation possibility a reserach cooperation agreement is offered aimed at a further development of the concept onto a prototype that could be the basis for a marketable product.
Advantages and Innovations:
In comparision with the state of the art the offered CPM machine:
- enables a passive and active movement therapy
- is one CPM machine for both joint types - knee and hip
- allows a therapy of knee and hip joints at the same time
- enables a full hip movement
- allows an early improvement of the motion scale and mobilization of the patient
- is shortening the period of time for rehabilitation after hip and knee surgeries
