The group seeks manufacturing companies operating in the food or drug sectors, in particular in the bio packaging field, interested in a technical cooperation agreement for the adaptation of the technology to specific needs.
Description:
The solution, developed by an Italian university research group with expertise in new materials, is an engineered processing technology of bio-based plastic for bio packaging.
During last years, the interest of various industrial domains in biopolymers is rapidly increasing; in fact their market is expected to grow to a rate of 15-20% in the next period. Moreover, the market is expected to grow of, at least, five times by the 2020. Biodegradable, in particular compostable bio-based plastics, are expected to have the greatest commercial potential, especially in food and drug packaging.
Nowadays, bio plastics employed in the industrial applications are characterised by relevant costs and extremely poor properties.

The proposed engineered bio plastics can permit an increase of their mechanical, physical and chemical properties.
The research efforts are facing the issue of reinforcing bio-based polymers by the mechanical or chemical dispersion of fillers within the polymers. Easy-route to the improvement of bio-based polymers are sought, as these routes should be then implemented on industrial scales by conventional melt processing (extrusion, injection moulding and thermo-forming).
Appropriate strategies and the choice of reinforcing agents (i.e. natural nanotubes or fibrils and inert model clays or their weighted combination) and of bridging molecules due to chemical and physical interactions with the bio-derived polymers allow to reduce progressively the technical gaps between biopolymers and conventional oil-relying polymers.
The proposed solution allows to change the stiffness and mechanical strength of the bio plastic, brings their thermo-stability to over 100°C and their chemical endurance to an acceptable level when in contact with acid, saline or basic environments.
