Description:
A Spanish doctor specialised in orthopaedic surgery has developed an innovative arthroscopic transosseous suture system for the treatment of rotator cuff tears.
The application environment is the general population and pathologies include all breaks of shoulder rotator cuff at any age range. The shoulder pathology affects 3-7% of the general population and 60% of these are due to rotator cuff disease (the incidence increases with age).
The target population is anyone who goes to medical consultation because of a sore shoulder and his/her rotator cuff is broken. Current treatments consist in performing shoulder arthroscopy suture ruptured tendon anchorage by placing and subsequent passage of the wire threaded through the anchor through the tendon. The development of arthroscopic techniques has enabled these sutures minimizing damage to soft tissues and accelerating the recovery time of patients. However, current techniques have the disadvantage of rising surgeries (given the high cost of implants and materials to be used) and the need to place foreign materials on the patient´s shoulder, which implies a theoretical increased risk of rejections and infections (which results in increased healthcare spending by the recommendation of the use of prophylactic antibiotics).

The innovative arthroscopic transosseous suture system combines the benefits of both techniques and eliminates the risks of both, and works inserting a clamp that takes the broken tendon to the point where it is to be inserted. The system allows the surgeon to pass a thread through a bone tunnel and broken tendon. Detailed information about the technology is available.

The inventor does not have the capability to manufacture and market the device, and therefore he would like to reach license agreements with manufacturers of surgical devices.
Advantages and Innovations:
This new technology provides a number of benefits:
1. - It is not necessary to place the tendon suture anchors (each anchor has a cost of -Y-euro; 300- 400 each patient and a minimum of 2-3 anchors are implanted), and this involves considerable cost savings.
2. - No foreign material must be placed in the patient´s shoulder (with the consequent lack of rejection or foreign body reactions, minimizing secondary infections implants and secondary iatrogenic damage to the placement thereof).
3. - It is a simple and reproducible technique that achieves suturing the tendon in one step, thus shorten surgical times, obtaining benefits for reducing the risk of patient infection, the reduced need for anesthetic drugs and for medical professionals and optimize hospital to get surgery time and to use the same resources to a greater number of patients / centres.
4. - Utilizing this technique is not at all incompatible with the realization of the classical techniques (although this may be for those more complex and / or major rescue cases). It could even be a complementary technique thereof.
