Una unidad de investigación búlgara especializada en I+D en los sectores de microbiología, bacteriología, protozoología, virología, inmunología y tecnologías bioquímicas ha desarrollado una tecnología innovadora de producción de biogás con una capacidad de producción de metano mayor que la ofrecida por las tecnologías actuales. Esta tecnología se basa en un método de digestión anaerobia de una mezcla de residuos orgánicos (incluyendo desechos de frutas y vegetales, estiércol y paja) y utiliza parámetros de proceso estandarizados y optimización de los componentes implicados. El instituto busca compañías para implementar y adaptar la tecnología a sus necesidades mediante acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica.

A Bulgarian research unit operating in the field of microbiology has developed an innovative technology for biogas production which has a higher methane production output than existing technologies. The institute seeks to reach commercial agreements with technical assistance with companies willing to implement the invention and adapt it to their needs.
Description:
The Bulgarian research institute is the largest one in the country for R-Y-D in the fields of microbiology, bacteriological, protozoology, virology, immunology and biochemical technologies. The institute has successfully implemented various projects and has international experience with institutes and industrial companies.

The production of biogas from organic waste is of interest to many companies in the energy and alternative energy sectors. Moreover environmental issues are directly addressed when using bio-organic waste for an end product with added value. Companies and research units put effort in optimisation of the processes related to bio-gas production.

The technology developed by the institute uses a method for anaerobic digestion of a mixture of organic wastes (including waste fruit and vegetables, manure from cattle and wheat straw), using standardised process parameters and specially developed optimisation of the components involved. Specific proportions of the waste fruit and vegetables, cattle manure an wheat straw are used in order to obtain 0.58 to 1.09 cubic meters of biogas per kilogram substrate with a methane content of 0.32 to 0.65 cubic meters / kilogram and degradation rate of 50.8 to 83.1 percent. Anaerobic bio-degradation is carried out in a near to continuous mode. Everyday at the same time the input of the digester is fed with a certain amount of substrate and the same the amount is provided as output. The temperature in the digester is kept constantly at specifically defined temperature (with possible variation of 0.5 degree Celsius). A constant monitoring of biogas quantity and and content of methane and carbon dioxide is performed.

The institute seeks to reach commercial agreements with technical assistance with industrial partners willing to implement the technology as know-how and expertise will be provided by the institute.
Advantages and Innovations:
- the method is novel and an optimum ratio of the individual components in the mixture is achieved in comparison to competitive technologies;
- methane quantity of up to 70% in the biogas - higher in comparison to competitive technologies;
- the resulting digestate after digestion has the qualities of organic fertiliser and may be used for organic farming.
