The Dutch/Flemish shared research consortium has a focus on technology development for the production of functionalized bio-based aromatics for performance materials, chemicals -Y- coatings. Over the last year the research consortium has been developing new routes to bio-based aromatics and improving their ground-breaking research.
Given the global challenges that society is facing with respect to CO2 emissions, pollution, global warming and shortage of suitable fossil oil reserves, new biobased production routes need to be realized urgently to address the ecological and economic challenges that humanity and industry are facing.
The technologies of the consortium are threefold and afford a variety of aromatic compounds (drop-in or new functionality):
1. one route transforms carbohydrates from biomass into aromatic compounds through furanic intermediates followed by Diels-Alder chemistry to produce aromatics.
2. one route transforms lignin via depolymerisation and fractionation into aromatic (mixtures).
3. one route transforms waste streams via pyrolysis or gasification into benzene toluene and xylene.
The consortium aims to improve already well-performing chemistry for each of these processing blocks, to translate the obtained knowledge into scalable (continuous) process technology and has invested in bench-scale facilities (1-10 litre per hour throughput) in which the first steps of scale-up of these processes and their economical evaluation can be studied.
Setting up a sustainable and economically successful commercial scale business, is a major challenge in this field and the desired outcome. A significant concerted action and research effort is needed and is based on the open innovation methodology, bringing together collective intelligence of various industries, companies and knowledge organizations.
Currently the consortium offers several opportunities for global actors in the fields of feedstock, conversion, equipment, aromatic intermediates and end products to participate in R-Y-D concerning biomass to bio-aromatics.
For this reason, the consortium is looking for research cooperation agreements, technical cooperation agreements, licence and manufacturing agreements are searched with research institutes but also with SME´s and larger companies in these fields.
Advantages and Innovations:
Aromatic building blocks represent a very significant share of our current building blocks (30-40% present in fossil based feedstocks), not only in order to create fuel components, base chemicals or polymers, but also to create polymer additives, colorants, flavours and fragrances. Currently virtually all aromatic building blocks are made from fossil oil that will become scarce. Hence, it is important to develop technology to replace the current aromatic petrochemical based building blocks by alternative feedstocks such as biomass and sugars.
The novel approach and technology is anticipating the expected growing shortage of aromatics from the petrochemical industry and the widely shared ambition to green the chemical industry.
