Description:
An Italian research center has developed several semantic technological tools. The most important developed tool is a system based on combinatory categorial grammar, discourse representation theory, linguistic frames, and ontology design patterns, whose results are enriched with NER and WSD. This system formally maps DRT logical forms (DRS) to RDF and OWL by exploiting frame-based design, and by implementing a set of heuristics that address terminology and structure generation according to semantic web design practices. These system's heuristics are designed to take into account the semantic interpretation of language when transforming it into a formalized form. It addresses, besides sense tagging (to associate a type to a certain entity), sense disambiguation (to identify the correct sense of a term given a certain context), semantic role labeling (to assign a thematic role to an entity, in the context of an event it participates in), terminology extraction and composition, taxonomy induction, named entity resolution, etc. This system has been successfully used for semantic sentiment analysis, that is the identification of the sentiment features (opinion holder, opinion expressing words, opinion context, topics and subtopics) for each entity in a given text.
Advantages and Innovations:
A unique system that produces RDF/OWL has been developed by means of a mapping model and a set of heuristics that follow good practices of OWL ontologies and RDF data design. Besides, the produced RDF complies with linked data principles as the system reuses existing vocabularies when possible, resolves named entities over resources existing in RDF datasets of the linked data cloud (LOD) and disambiguates domain terminology against WordNet and foundation ontologies.
