Description:
A Bulgarian research unit with more than 50 years of experience in the research and development of technologies and products in the field of general and inorganic chemistry has developed an integrated technology to process rice husks into materials with added value.
The technology is novel and addresses an environmental problem of rice milling companies giving an ecological and practical solution.
By pyrolysis (from 300 to 700 degrees Celsius) of rice husks composite material silicon dioxide is obtained used for purification of oil spills in water or water treatment of heavy metals. Through air combustion amorphous silicon dioxide is obtained, which is used as a component of concrete or water glass.
Due to the high silica content of rice husks are noncombustible, they can not be used as livestock feed or soil improvers. At a suitable heat treatment in air or inert atmosphere, in a special reactor type "fluidized" bed different products and precursors can be obtained for the preparation of other high-tech materials such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon tetrachloride, magnesium silicide and pure silicon.
The specially constructed reactor which is a secret know-how of the institute can be adjusted for thermal destruction of the rice flakes in air or nitrogen, yielding respectively "white" or "black" ashes.
"White" ash is almost pure ash (³ 95%) of amorphous silica with a highly developed specific surface, which can be used as cheap filler plastics, as adsorbent or carrier of heterogeneous catalysts, effectively replacing the more expensive classic materials.
"Black" ash represents about 55% amorphous silica incorporated with about 45% amorphous and highly porous carbon. This product can be used as a filler of the rubber, the adsorbent, as well as for cleaning spills of oil or oil on water surfaces. In the latter case, the resulting heterogeneous mass is high-calorie and after collection can be used as fuel in thermal power plants.
Furthermore, in the pyrolysis of rice husks the considerable amount of heat is obtained and therefore may be converted into energy.
The institute seeks commercial agreements with technical assistance with interested companies for the implementation of the technology, providing the needed expertise and adapting the technology to the specific needs of the company, and or research cooperation agreements for further development and testing new applications.
