Un instituto de investigación búlgaro ha desarrollado una tecnología y equipo de extracción de sustancias bioactivas a partir de plantas silvestres o cultivadas (especias y hierbas) mediante el uso de técnicas de extracción de solventes. Esta tecnología se aplica para extraer productos farmacéuticos, nutracéuticos, aromas, colorantes, etc. Después del proceso de extracción, el solvente se elimina casi por completo de la masa sólida y se reutiliza en el proceso. La masa vegetal se deposita en el ambiente sin producir daños o se utiliza directamente como pienso en explotaciones ganaderas. El instituto busca socios industriales con el fin de establecer acuerdos comerciales con asistencia técnica.

It can be applied for extraction of various agents such as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, flavors, colorants, etc. The exhausted vegetable mass can be deposited with no harm for the environment. The organisation seeks commercial agreement with technical assistance with industrial partners.
Description:
The research institute has more than 40 years of experience in R-Y-D activities in the field chemical technologies and chemical engineering. The unit has vast international experience in joint projects and science-business collaboration.

Herbs and spices are widely utilised in the food, health, pharmaceutical and other industries. Their beneficial effects to the human body have been attributed to the presence of active phytochemical ingredients with some efficiency for disease treatment and health enhancement. The substances in herbal products have broad application in different fields. Herbal processing and extraction technologies have been developed to obtain the optimal amounts of active ingredients from herbs and spices and to cope with the rising demands for herbal products but efficiency and flexibility still remain a problem.

The developed technological solution is based on solvent extraction techniques. Bio-active substances such as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, flavors, colorants, etc. can be extracted from wild or cultivated botanicals (spices or herbs). After the extraction process is complete, the retained solvent is almost completely removed from the exhausted solid mass and reused in the process. The exhausted vegetable mass can be deposited with no harm for the environment or even directly used for feeding farm livestock. The process can also be easily adopted in water-steam distillation systems, suitable for production of natural aromas or essential oils. Both processes can be performed consecutively using the same equipment.

The extractors operate at atmospheric or reduced pressure. The latter mode is applied in case of thermo-sensitive products. Choosing the appropriate vacuum level, one can remove most of the solvent residue from the enriched extract, operating in the range from 30°C to 60°C.

Two types of extraction systems meeting the needs of both large and small production plants have been developed: the first installation applies cross-current percolation extraction scheme and is suitable for production plants of any size, while the second installation applies the so-called "dip-and-drain" technology and is recommendable for small size companies with flexible production program.

The research unit seek commercial agreements with technical assistance with companies offering expertise for adaptation to specific agents that are to be extracted and technical know-how for joint collaboration.
