Un grupo de investigación de una universidad italiana ha desarrollado nuevas espumas metálicas que combinan las características de los metales con las ventajas estructurales de las espumas. Las espumas tienen diferentes estructuras en función de si las células son cerradas, parcialmente abiertas o totalmente abiertas. Las aplicaciones dependen de la morfología de las espumas metálicas. Estas estructuras presentan unas excelentes propiedades mecánicas, como resistencia, rigidez, bajo peso y buenas características de absorción de energía. La universidad busca centros de investigación, universidades, socios industriales y fabricantes con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica para adaptar estas espumas metálicas a necesidades específicas.

An Italian University research group with expertise in new materials has developed innovative metal foams that combine the characteristics of bulk metals with the structural advantages of foams. These metal foams can have different structures depending on closed, partially open or totally open cells. The applications depend on the morphology of the metal foams. In particular, closed cells metal foam possesses an excellent combination of good mechanical properties, mostly strength and stiffness and low weight. Another characteristic is the good energy-absorbing properties making the metal foam extremely suitable for crash-protection and packaging.
Regarding the open cells structures, they have attractive heat-transfer properties, allowing their employment to cool electronic equipment as heat exchangers in several industrial applications such as in automotive and aerospace industry, machines construction and biomedical field.
