Este proceso permite la autoadministración indolora de insulina y vacunas a través de la piel y es una alternativa a las inyecciones con agujas hipodérmicas administradas por los profesionales sanitarios, que resultan dolorosas. Description:
Micro-needles are minimally invasive drug delivery devices that have the potential to deliver biological molecules such as insulin and vaccines through the skin in a painless way by self administering compared to painful hypodermic injections administered by a healthcare professional.
The micro needle is designed to enter the outer layer of the skin allowing the drug to act locally or be absorbed by the capillary system.

There are a number of manufacturing solutions to producing microneedles such as wet and dry etching or the machining of metals such as silicon dioxide and titanium. However these methods are not cost effective, clinically effective or easily sterilised for mass production.

This UK university has developed a novel process using micro injection mouldings to produce microneedles using a medical grade polymer. This allows the production of microneedles patches at a low cost while preventing any unwanted effects caused by the possible breakage of the needle tips into the skin, so allowing the drugs to be absorbed through the skin in a more controlled delivery rate.

The university is seeking industrial partners for co-development of this technology. Implementing this jointly by sharing their know how in the product development. The Industrial partner could also have the technical expertise and are already active in the field of injection mouldings but may want to diversify into the development of micro products for the medical sector. This could be through a joint venture leading to a licence agreement and or technical cooperation agreement.
