Electric drive systems are being developed since quite some time. In the transport/mobility sector, but also in machine and engine construction for industrial processes it is a major concern to reduce emissions and production costs and simultanously increase the performance and efficiency of drive systems. Existing solutions still lack efficiency and profitability.
A German company, expert in machine tool engineering has developed a novel electric drive system for applications in machine tools, industrial automation and electro mobility. The new drive system combines two electric propulsion principles: the reluctance principle and the transversal flow principle. By integrating new control algorithms through advanced hardware and intelligent software, new component arrangements and the use of novel compound materials the advantages of both principles are exploited while disadvantages are eliminated. Superior performance is achieved with high torque and power density, high cost efficiency and by making the production of a transversal flow machine economically viable. The innovative drive combination is an alternative to torque engines and offers with regard to the entire propulsion system (including cooling) a very high efficiency factor.
The special hollow shaft construction of the drive system needs to be highlighted. It allows the integration of various functional modules and tools depending on the application e.g. shaft couplings, extruder screws or the passage of parts to be machined (rods, pipes, ...).

Strategic materials are used very economically in the innovative drive system, thus reducing the use of rare earth metals and copper drastically. The design of reluctance variants does not need any rare earth metals, while the permanent magnetic variants need approximately 50% less than comparable drive systems.
The ability of the new drive system to realise a high revolution speed combined with a consistent high torque allows highly demanding application such as direct drives, whereas conventional drives need to be specifically designed as motor gearbox combinations. The innovative drive provides maximum torque right from the start, even from "zero" speed. This is a big advantage for applications in which a fully-loaded start or holding a position under load is necessary.
The novel electric drive system therefore is very suitable for pumps, compressors, turning tables, serial production machines which need a high torque right from standstill. But also the emerging e-mobile market would be another big application field.
For the novel drive system technology the company has registered a number of patents.
The company is seeking electric engine developers/producers for the various application areas such as machine tools, industrial plants, electrical power devices, electric vehicles etc. interested in purchasing the patents or licensing the technology.
