A Spanish research centre working on sustainable energy technologies has developed a new power block that increases overall efficiency, allows faster transient response and different operative conditions. Description:
Energy generation systems need a power block to convert the energy of a thermal fluid into electricity. Actual systems can be improved in order to increase the overall efficiency, the transient response and the energy balance while securing electricity networks and reducing investment, operation and maintenance costs.

The Spanish research centre works on energy resource management and Integration of renewable and energy storage devices. They have developed and patented a power block that allows different operative conditions, modularity, flexibility and scalability of the model. It also allows renewable energy and energy storage integration and energy recovery.

The power block improved characteristic include:

Decoupled turbomachinery; the compressor and turbine can work at different operative conditions (no matching restrictions -Y- higher efficiency performance).

The power block is modular, flexible and scalable; this allows the system to have different arrangement that increase the efficiency, such as:

· Parallel arrangement; Power plant capacity increasing (higher mass flows)
· Series arrangement; Two-stage compression/expansion (higher pressure ratios -Y- intermediate cooling / reheating)
· Hybrid arrangement; Parallel and Series arrangements switching modes operated by valves depending on operative conditions

The new development also allows the hybridization and the integration of renewable energies, this add some innovative characteristics:
· Energy recovery; Bottoming cycle for low temperature thermal energy recovery
· Renewable energy integration; Compressor operation powered by electricity from PV panels and/or wind
· Energy storage; Electricity energy storage (batteries), compressed air storage (CAS) and thermocline energy storage (hot air)
· Hybrid mode; Auxiliary burner for transient response


This technical innovations of the power block have impacts at business level:
· Electricity price reduction. High efficiency (very high temperatures), compact power block, low O-Y-M costs, no water needed
· Significantly increased technology performance. High performance thermodynamic cycle, energy recovery possibilities
· Reducing installation times. Compact power block, modular concept
· Reducing operation costs. No matching restrictions between compressor and turbine, no freezing risks nor temperature restrictions
· Reducing life-cycle environmental impact. Air as HTF and WTF. No hazardous materials required
· Renewable energy integration. Compressor can be powered with electricity from other renewable energy sources.


Advantages and Innovations:
The advantages compared to current stateof the art are:

1. Increased overall efficiency (regenerative configuration, higher working temperatures, highly-efficient solar receiver and more efficient power cycle);
2. Faster transient response (high-speed electric machines for electricity production);
3. Investment cost reduction, rapid power plant commissioning and reduced financial risks;
4. Reduced operation and maintenance costs (flexible and modular concept and using air as heat transfer fluid)
5. Improved energy balance while securing electricity networks by using thermal heat and electrochemical storage capabilities.
