Description:
An Italian university lab has developed an invention concerning a new design for metal stiffening trusses both vertical and horizontal. The connections between segments of the truss has specific characteristics and an example is represented in the attached picture. The major fields of application of the novel trusses are for bridges of any length and for any other heavy structure needing a support (including hangars and depots). The very same design may also be used for any kind of planking or scaffolding, including planking for restoring works.

Advantages and Innovations:
The novel proprietary design of stiffening trusses has several advantages vs. conventional design. It allows remarkable improvements of the performances of heavy structures, by reducing the weight of the truss itself. The hexagons (see attached picture) have the minimal segment length, which means higher resistance to loads or, maintaining the same performances, smaller section of the truss and hence lower costs. The particular shape breaks the symmetry of the structure and prevent the appearance of travelling waves due to the oscillations of the bridge under the action of the wind or vehicular traffic loads.
