Summary:
A Spanish researcher, specialised in mechanical engineering (railway sector), has developed a new device which fixed on the top of the overhead conductor rail allows to improve the electrical contact between the pantograph and the conductor rail, avoiding the electrical arcs at high speeds and enlarging the length span.
A commercial agreement with technical assistance or financial, joint venture, technical cooperation or license agreements with private or public companies are sought.
Description:
PhD Spanish university researcher on mechanical engineering with 4 year of experience in the interaction of the pantograph and the overhead railway conductor in the railway sector. The researcher has deep experience in mechanical design, finite element modelling and experimental modal analysis with vibratory phenomena´s.

The train feed with a pantograph sliding underneath the overhead catenary needs stable conditions to reduce the electrical arcs and to avoid excessively oscillations and wear because of the extremely contact forces. Flexible catenary systems are reasonably designed to solve the problem up to 250 Km/h. Nevertheless, flexible catenaries are not as reliable as catenaries with overhead conductor rail and also flexible catenaries are sometimes not viable in tunnels. Catenary overhead conductor rail avoids the pantograph snag and facilitates the installation in tunnels; however, train speeds over 100 Km/h needs reduction of the span length between supports. Nowadays solutions need 5 meters of span length for speeds of 250 Km/h, therefore raising the price of facilities. The new device fixed on the top of the overhead conductor rail and designed to improve the electrical contact between the pantograph and the conductor rail in the speed range of 0 to 300 km/h, avoid the electrical arcs at high speeds and enlarge the length span beyond 12 meters.

The invention is applicable to any catenary overhead conductor rail:
- Improves the pantograph-catenary electrical contact connection, increasing speed operation above 270 km/h.

- Extends span length above 12 meters with speed of 250 km/h.

- Improves electrical contact of a second pantograph running along the same catenary just after the first one in double configuration pantograph.

- Improvement of already existing facilities of other installers of catenary overhead conductor rail, even with the contracting of future maintenances.

- Allow facilities out of the tunnels, since It would not need so many supports. This opens the market for new projects with the advantages of the high reliability and the limited maintenance of the catenary overhead conductor rail, opposite to the flexible catenary. These projects would be unrealizable with the current solutions of catenary overhead conductor rail.

- Contribution to the differentiation of the current solutions of the market, thanks to the new design. The solution visually is different from what exists nowadays in the competition, allowing a clear differentiation with regard to the others competitors.

The inventor is considering several collaboration possibilities to implement the solution in real conditions and launch the project to market:

- Through a commercial agreement with technical assistance, the acquisition of the device and the provision of support services could be arranged with trading companies, distributor or even governmental companies specialized in the field of railway electrification.

- Installation and maintenance companies interested in the improvement of the catenary overhead conductor rail are sought for the improvement and further development of the technology, through a technical cooperation agreement.

- Investors, preferably stakeholders of the railway sector, are a good option to solve the financial requirements of the launching process of the solution. Thus, a financial agreement represents an option. Furthermore a joint venture agreement, for the establishment of a new entity to further develop and market the product, could be envisaged.

- The inventor offers also the possibility to transfer the rights involving the authorization to use the technology, in return for a fee or shares royalties (license agreement)
Advantages and Innovations:
The innovation allows you to modify the stress state of the rigid catenary improving its overall performance before the passage of the pantograph.

The main advantages of the product are as follows:

- General improvement of electrical contact between the pantograph and the overhead conductor rail in the speed range from 0 to 300 km / h (railway lines with low, medium and high speed operation).

- Increase the speed of the train up to 300 km / h. Competition currently reaches maximum speeds of 250 km / h.

- Increase the distance between supports. The device can run at 250 km / h with distances between supports of more than 12 meters, while the competition requires distances of 6 meters and less between supports for the same speed. The competition does not assess the harmful effect of the first pantograph on the second and does not separate the vibration caused by the first pantograph on the second, worsening the electrical contact.

- Passive system with low maintenance costs and manufacturing. The maintenance can be performed by the staff in charge of the facilities maintenance.

- Easily installable on any overhead conductor rail profile existing in the market without the need for electrical insulation.

- Allow facilities out of the tunnels, since It would not need so many supports. This opens the market for new projects with the advantages of the high reliability and the limited maintenance of the overhead conductor rail, opposite to the flexible catenary, currently widely employed outside the tunnels. These projects out of the tunnels would be unrealizable with the current solutions of overhead conductor rail of the competency, because they need to install many supports.
