En procesos químicos de las industrias alimentaria, farmacéutica, de la madera, producción química, etc., muchos de los accidentes se deben a explosiones de mezclas de polvos inflamables, causando daños a personas y al entorno. Gracias a este equipo, la nube de polvo en el aire se distribuye de forma más uniforme y se preserva la integridad del polvo inyectado en el aparato. La universidad busca socios con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia o cooperación técnica.

Description:
An Italian university, department of chemical engineering, developed a new device for measurement of explosion parameters that derive from the pressure temporal trend, the maximum explosion pressure and the deflagration index.
In chemical processes (food, pharmaceutical and wood industries, chemical manufacturing, etc.), a high number of accidents are imputable to explosions of flammable dust mixtures, causing injuries and damages to people and surrounding environment.
Prevention and mitigation measures are the only way to protect from accidental explosion coming from dust-air or dust-gas-air mixtures. Such measures are based on the knowledge of the two aforementioned explosion parameters that must be measured by standard procedures. The standard equipment for measurements of these explosion parameters consists of a closed steel combustion chamber, equipped with a dust dispersion apparatus and a pressure acquisition system. The apparatus must possess two important requirements: it must be capable of dispersing a fairly uniform dust cloud in the vessel and of realizing a controlled turbulence level. However, it has been proven that it is not possible to generate a uniform dust-air cloud dispersion with the standard procedure/equipment, as well as it is not possible to control the turbulence level inside the sphere, which varies in time, space and with the properties of the dust.
Moreover, there is also another issue: the method of dust injection in the sphere may cause severe particle fragmentation (due to the violent impact between particles and walls, both of the sphere and rebound nozzle), thus changing the particle size distribution of the dust and altering its flammability and explosion features.
In this framework, the authors developed, tested and patented in Italy a novel equipment that is able to create a uniform cloud of dust in air and to preserve the integrity of the dust injected into the apparatus. By means of an upgrade of the developed device, which has already been proposed and under development, also the turbulence level should be controlled.
University seeks manufactures to license the consolidated technology, supporting the implementation process and transferring the required know-how, or companies to sign a technical cooperation agreement to further development and to build the upgraded apparatus suitable to control the turbulence level and to preserve the integrity of the dust particles.
Advantages and Innovations:
When using the new equipment to perform dust explosion tests, two features are significantly improved with respect to the standard system:
1. The dust cloud in air is distributed more uniformly;
2. The integrity of the dust injected into the apparatus is preserved.
