Summary:
A Polish company specialized in noise reduction and vibroacoustics has developed a new method for acoustic analysis of noise sources in industrial plants.

The company seeks industry partners for technical cooperation agreements in order to further test the method in different conditions and adapt it to different industrial environments.
Description:
Industrial plants are characterized by difficult measurement conditions which result from reflecting surfaces and large number of varied sources. Typically, measurements must be made relatively quickly without disturbing production process. And it is also impossible to interrupt its fragments. All these things generate unwanted background noise in a reverberant space.

It causes that traditional measuring instruments and methods are insufficient to identify noise sources. Sound level meters are non-directional and not designed for the spatial location of noise sources. It makes them susceptible to background noise levels.

Conventional methods prove well when the source of noise is easily accessible and can be identified without any problems. However, it is much more difficult in case of noise reduction in production plants where we often have to deal with the so-called complex acoustic situation.

Current standards are inapplicable to solve industrial noise problems. In response to needs from industry a new method for the acoustic analysis of noise sources in industrial plants has been developed.

This method, consist of three steps:

1) Localization of acoustic emissions using an acoustic camera and 3D laser;
2) Preparation of acoustic model and creation of noise sources ranking;
3) Proposition of an optimal anti-noise solution for major sources.

Identification, location and inventory of the major noise sources are carried out with the specialist acoustic measurements. An acoustic camera is beamforming device equipped with a microphone array along with a built-in digital camera. By the application of the measurement results in the form of isolines on a digital image of the object under examination, it is possible to identify precisely the source of noise.

3D laser is used for scanning closed-spaces geometry. The result of these scan is used as three dimensional model on which one can visualize effect from acoustic camera. Together with the 3D laser (up to 50 m radius), acoustic camera becomes a very powerful tool which gives a possibility to "see the sound in 360º".

Software for noise prediction gives opportunities to create ranking of noise sources and check the possibilities to reduce the noise level. Prior to the selection and design of anti-noise solutions, noise sources must be identified and noise propagation must be carefully evaluated. The results of measurements from acoustic camera are used as an input in acoustic simulations. Also geometry model coming from 3D laser allows reproduction of an industry plant interior. Noise prediction is based on the calculation of sound propagation from the source to the receiver and of the sound power level of sources.
