A young team of scientists from a German research institute, active in the field of farm animal research, invented a method for the quantitative prediction of the birth-dates of farm animals in order to reduce efforts and costs as well as hormone application in livestock farming. The inventors are searching for industrial partners for a licensing or development research agreement to ensure further development and commercialization of their invention.

Introduction:

An increasingly intensified animal husbandry places higher demands on monitoring and supervision of every individual animal in livestock farming. In order to meet these requirements, work is carried out with the use of different automation and standardization procedures. A particularly care-intensive period is the birth and first aid of newborn animals.
In order to ensure timely obstetrics, farm animals are monitored intensively by staff during the critical period before birth. At the same time, with the administration of hormones farmers attempt to synchronize the time of birth of animals of one group.

The process of hormonal synchronization and hormonal birth initiation causes an environmental burden comparable to the environmental impact of the use of human anticonceptives.

Idea and method:

Individual prognosis monitoring can automate procedures for the actual birth date.
The innovation made by a young team of German university scientists, active in the field of farm animal research, allows timely detection of different birthdays of young animals, which considerably reduces workload. In addition, a reduction in hormone use can be foreseen.

Already today with the use of simple activity sensors it is possible to give qualitative predictions of the beginning of the birth in the sense of premonitions. The invention presented here supplements such warnings by a statement about the presumed time of birth.
This quantitative prediction is based on the contactless measurement of prenatal restlessness of animals. Such restlessness can be expressed in vocalization, interaction, and locomotion and can be measured using acoustic, light, ultrasound or radar sensors. The prognosis itself is based on empirical assumptions about the natural course of the measured parameters in the prenatal period. For example, age-related differences in the parameter sequence.

In order to make the developed method commercial accessible to clients of industrial partners and to develop the method to its full potential, the inventors are searching for cooperation in the framework of a licensing or research cooperation agreement.
