Un grupo de investigación de una universidad italiana con experiencia en nuevos materiales ha desarrollado un método de producción de nuevos cables eléctricos y de transmisión de datos con alta conductividad eléctrica y velocidad de transmisión de datos. La solución se aplica en casos en los que es necesario reducir el peso o mejorar la conductividad. El método desarrollado permite aumentar la conductividad térmica y eléctrica. Los nuevos cables se emplean en sistemas de suministro eléctrico en ciudades, sistemas eléctricos de industrias y hogares, transmisión de datos, cables mixtos y transmisión por microondas. El grupo de investigación busca socios industriales con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica para adaptar la tecnología a necesidades específicas, así como acuerdos de licencia.

The solution can be applied in the cases where a reduction of the weight or an improving of the conductivity are required. The group is looking for industrial partners for a technical cooperation agreement for the adaptation of the technology to specific needs or for a license agreement.
Description:
The patent-pending solution, developed and experimented by the Italian University research group located in Rome and with expertise in new materials technologies, relates to new electric or data/signal transmission cables and an innovative method for their production.

By "cable" it is intended to refer to the set including conductors, insulators, sheaths and protective or shielding reinforcements, specifically built to convey the current for both electricity transport and signal transmission.

More in detail, the developed method is able to increase both thermal and electrical conductivity. Consequently it can be applied in all the cases where a reduction of the weight (i.e. with the same electrical resistance) or an improving of the conductivity are required.
These new cables, thanks to their method of production, consist of a core of metallic material (such as copper, aluminium, silver, gold, nickel or alloys and foams), or in non-metallic material (such as polymeric material selected in the group comprising polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polystyrine (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide (PA), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS), polylactic acid (PLA) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)), or in a ceramic material.

These innovative cables are useful for the electricity supply lines to towns, for electrical systems of industries and/or civilian homes, for transmission of data, (for example from and to a computer), mixed cables (for example useful for signals and data transport, such as those used for modern cameras, in which the same LAN cable is useful for both power supply and data transmission (text, images and/or voices) from the camera to the receiver) as well as for microwaves transmission.

The University research group is looking for industrial companies interested in a technical cooperation agreement between parties in order to adapt the technology to meet the partner needs using the expertise of the developer. A License agreement could be also considered.
Advantages and Innovations:
The proposed cables, if compared to similar ones known in the art, are very innovative with a lot of advantages. Indeed they:

- have a reduced skin effect (the "skin effect" is the tendency for alternating current (AC) to flow mostly near the outer surface of an electrical conductor, such as metal wire. This effect becomes more apparent as the frequency increases);
- have a higher frequency band;
- can be used at higher frequencies therefore offer greater bandwidth;
- have a higher capacity and/or speed of electricity conduction;
- have a higher capacity and/or speed of signal conduction;
- have low production costs, and, when polymers or particular metal foams are used "poor/cheap in the building material" or metals having a value lower than copper, for example aluminum, they are less or not at all likely to be stolen.
