Description:
Researchers working in the cryogenics (extremely low temperatures) field in a UK research organisation have developed a high performance displacement type Stirling cycle cryogenic cooler which may be used in cooling subsystems for sensors and focal plane arrays n commercial and laboratory applications. Its lightweight and maintenance free virtues make also it suitable for space based applications.
This development modifies a basic Stirling cycle cooler and comprises of a cylinder extending between warm and cool ends with a regenerator arranged to reciprocate axially within the cylinder. This arrangement and movement provides a heat exchanging fluid path for an operating fluid between the warm and cold ends. The addition of a flow shaper element at the cold end increases turbulence and thus induces forced convection. This increases the heat transfer co-efficient at the cold end and increase the response time of the cooler compared to current designs of coolers (comparative test data can be provided). The project is at the stage where a demonstration model has been built and tested and now offers the opportunity for a commercial partner to take this development to market within a licence agreement.
