Description:
A starter motor is an electric motor, which rotates internal-combustion engine in order to initiate the engine´s operation by using its own power. Once the engine starts to operate, it continues to operate on its own without the need of a starter.

Within this framework, a starter motor can fail due to various reasons. When they fail to operate they are disassembled from the engine for repairing. Apart from failure related disassemblies, starter motors are also taken out for maintenance. Conventional starter motors contains a bulky armature which is in fact the biggest and the heaviest part of a starter motor. Due to its nature, the armature causes a problem when the starter motor fails and needs to be dissembled from the main engine. Especially for heavy duty vehicles, the assembly/disassembly process requires a great man power and costs a significant labor time.

A Turkish company active in engine maintenance and modification for over 50 years has designed a new starter with a smaller armature. When compared with the traditional starters, the new design offers great flexibility and efficiency. The company manufactures this starter in small volumes for its own local market. Nevertheless, the company is willing to scale up this business by signing license agreements with partners from industry.
Advantages and Innovations:
The new design consists of a much smaller armature which makes the starter motor easy to handle in repairing/maintenance operations. In addition, since the armature is smaller, the starter motor spins faster and generates less torque. A reducer is integrated to the end of armature to increase the lower amount of torque transmitted to the main engine to a higher extend compared to the conventional starter motors. In other words, a greater torques is generated from a smaller armature with the help of this reducer in this new design.
