El concepto energéticamente eficiente que ofrece la recuperación de calor se basa en el uso de un catalizador y un equipo adecuado que permite un alto nivel de filtración y separación de gas y reducción de la pérdida de calor. La empresa busca socios interesados en establecer acuerdos de licencia y cooperación técnica y comercial.


A novel process for SO2 and dust removal from exhaust gases with heat recuperation
A small Macedonian research company has developed a novel process for SO2 and dust removal from exhaust gases coming from the steam and hot water boilers. The solution offers high levels of purification and heat recuperation based on an innovative SO2 filtration system. The company is looking for industrial and research partners interested in licensing, commercial or technical cooperation agreements
The combustion gases are common by-product from the operation of the steam and hot water boilers, characterized by high temperature and SO2 emissions. For reducing the level of SO2 emission into the atmosphere, different filtering systems are being used. The most common and economical approach for SO2 absorption involves the use of Ca(OH)2. Nevertheless, due to the high temperature of the exhaust gases, the underlying chemical reaction is rather poor, resulting in low levels of absorption achieved. The Macedonian company with over 40 years of experience in the field has developed an innovative filtration system that enables for enhanced SO2 absorption and energy efficiency through heat recuperation. This is achieved by the use of an appropriate combination of different catalysers and tailored-made filtering equipment.

The proposed solution includes an innovative SO2 filter that is activated automatically once the boiler starts to operate. The fuel gases flow through the absorbers filling and enters into the conically shaped space where the spraying of the reagent- and catalyser- containing water is done. The underlying chemical reaction achieved in the absorber is the following:

SO2 + K + O2 = KSO4, where K-catalyser

Thus, the role of the absorber is to retain the SO2 and dust from the fuel gases whereas the temperature of the sprayed water ranges from 25 to 60ºC. The sprayed water is mixed with the boiler´s purge water that flows continuously in small quantities with high temperature (>>100ºC). The water´s mixing process is done by utilizing the ejector-barometric system and results in a water stream with a temperature of 95ºC. The generated heat is than transmitted to the boiler´s soft water using the heat exchanger where water undergoes through the process of softening and cooling. The cooled water stream (25ºC) enters into the clarifier where the separation of the solid, heavy and light particles is done. The chemical reaction in the clarifier is the following:

KSO4 + Ca(OH)2 = CaSO4 + K + H2O

The formed sludge (CaSO4) is removed periodically, the water is recycled with only minimal addition of reagent and catalyser, whereas the catalyser is reused in the system.

The proposed filtering system is suitable for the steam and hot water boilers with forced air circulation. The heat recuperation, enabled by the absorbing water and heat exchanger, is equivalent to 8% of the fuel that will be spent for heating purposes in case of non-existence of the proposed system.

Having its primary focus on R-Y-D, the company has gained extensive experience in commercialization of its research results. In this regard, the company is interested in finding international partners for the purpose of capitalization on this research result and establishing long term, mutually beneficial cooperation. The commercialization path for the proposed solution is focused on both first market application and market replication (or adaptation to new settings/developing of new solutions). As regards market application, the company is willing to license out the technology to manufacturers of air filtering or purification systems that will enable market introduction of the solution thus increase the revenue of both parties and availability of the solution to a wider pool of end-users. Alternatively, the solution is marketed directly towards the end-users i.e. companies using steam or hot water boilers that will be offered a possibility to introduce the proposed solution under commercial terms and with an appropriate technical assistance by the Macedonian company. In both cases, the company will benefit not only in terms of financial gains, but also in obtaining market recognition of the offered technology. Suitable potential partners are also research entities interested in using the proposed solution in line with their current needs or for the purpose of developing new environmental solutions.
