Description:
An Italian company, born as a university spin-off in the Emilia-Romagna region, is devoted to research and development and active in the field of green biotechnology, in particular plants biotechnology. It was created in 2014 by scientists and also experts in business and finance. The company is specialised in research and development of innovative processes to:
- increase the sustainability of agricultural and farming activities
- improve quality and offer of natural ingredients and products for the nutraceutics, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals markets.

The innovation came from the combination of two productive fields, currently separated:
- micro algae production (to produce biomass);
- hydrolytic enzymes (which split molecules using water, helping anaerobic digestion) and cellulolytic enzymes in tobacco plants (which attack cellulose and provoke its degradation).
The use of these enzymes cooperates to increase micro algae production; the higher micro algae levels, the greater biomass quality for biodigestion in biogas plants. The combined action of these enzymes allows to produce bio-based products and protocols for cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry. The process was tested in the university laboratory during a three-year experimental test.

*Process and applications
1) The process starts from isolation and cultivation of micro algae, used for the abatement of nitrogen content in animal manure. The company´s idea of a manure treatment technology is based on farmers´ need to respond to current laws that limit the spreading of manure containing nitrogen. The treatment proposed allows to reduce nitrogen content by 90%.
2) The treated manure is then used as matrix for biodigesters -whose activity is helped by hydrolytic enzymes to increase its sustainability: biogas production is accelerated and there is also the possibility of combining valorization of waste or production of fuel, energy). Moreover, local production of enzymes is also environmental friendly because of its low impact and reduced transport costs.

4) From micro algae biomass, lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, pigments and oils are extracted; micro algae are in fact a source of high-value molecules for different sectors, especially cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
3) Via a proprietary process of the Italian startup, ingredients for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics are produced, as well as dietary supplements, product for organic agriculture and applications for biofuels.

The technology allows an easy scale-up of production and at the same time a precise production of enzymes. The use of enzymes instead of chemical products makes the process more sustainable and non pollutant. It uses natural sources of accelerators for biomass digestion to use in biomass, i.e. the cycle is highly sustainable and aimed at reusing waste.

The company aims to establish strategic partnerships to advance in the development of their technology and different projects:
- phytodepuration of zootechnical waste to be coupled with biodigesters for biogas;
- micro algae use for nutraceutics and cosmetics;
- enzymatic digestion of biomasses;
- research for advanced biofuels.

- the technology is based on more than twenty years of progresses in the development of micro algae technologies at the company´s university, progresses regarding the identification of enzymatic conversion paths to release the energy content of cellulosic biomass.
