A North West UK company has developed a Laser Heterodine Radiometer (LHR) with a wide spectral coverage (thus allowing multiple different gas particle detection) that is not based upon Fourier Transform Spectrometer technology, being more accurate, needing a smaller sample and can work from 100 meters to 40 Kilometres away . This device can detect a number of pre-determined volatiles and indicate their sources to a high degree of accuracy. Thus, there is a great potential in areas such as security of civil structures (airports, for example. The device would be complimentary to 'in-situ' detection methods (sniffer dogs, etc.) and would allow unambiguous identification and quantification of highly specific chemicals. The company is looking to develop this device and bring to market with partners specialising in chemical and gas detection security equipment manufacture and supply.
