A novel retractor for surgical wound edges that is less traumatising and easier to operate
An East of England (UK) surgical instrument manufacturer manufacturer of surgical instruments has developed an improved retractor for use during surgery. It puts less pressure on retracted tissues e.g. muscle tissue whilst maintaining proper exposure. It is also easier to operate. Further manufacturers of surgical instruments in the network countries are sought to manufacture and sell the retractor under license.
During a surgery while targeting deep structures, it is very important to keep the edges of wounds in place (see the Picture). Otherwise mishaps can occur. At the same time, the fixing or retraction of the edges should not cause any damage to the retracted tissues e.g. the muscle tissue. Retraction of the wound edges may be accomplished by simple retractors, such as the handheld Richardson or by fixed retractors, such as the simple Balfour or the more complex but adaptable Omni-track, and more specific in the spinal surgeries by non hinged cerebellar type or Beckman/Eaton, Beckman/Adson single hinged self retaining types. In the initial exploration phase of an operation, simple retractors are extremely useful because they can rapidly be moved as needed to explore eg. various quadrants of the abdomen and identify the extent of the pathology. Once the extent of pathology has been determined, there are advantages to using a fixed retractor. For small mid-line axial incisions where simple retraction of the myofascial layers is all that is required, a self-retaining retractor may suffice. Especially while performing spinal surgeries which require prolonged retraction for proper exposure, consultants experience drawbacks with the current tools. These have to come in full sets, bundled with their cost, space required, training of personnel and multiple trials in order to come to a proper size. Using a single instrument retractor often results in muscle trauma.
Thanks to an invention launched by an East of England (UK) company there is no longer a need for a full set of surgical retractors. The Picture shows the design of a self-retaining retractor with always perpendicular directions of prongs to the muscle fibres. This allows for proper and adequate muscle retraction, exploring clear surgical field. A second distal hinge connecting arms of the conventional self-retaining retractor distally with the middle of the transverse connecting bars of the prongs pieces allows for such direction with less load and less trauma to the muscle tissue. It is also easy to move handles from wound end to the opposite side without removing and re-application. The design makes it possible to be used in small incisions as well comparing using with other types that provides more advantage especially in limited approaches of spinal surgeries.
The instrument can also be used with blades replacing prongs. The novel retractor is on the market. At the same time, it is available for licensing to orthopaedics and surgical devices manufacturers who can manufacture and sell the retractor under license.
Advantages and Innovations:
Compared to the conventional tools, i.e. the non hinged and single hinged adaptable or self retaining types, the novel retractor features:
· A design that provides effective retraction, secured fit and a clear view thus reducing operative trauma to the tissues;
· Less pressure on the muscle tissue;
· Easier and faster handling.
