Innovative system for "zero discharge" wastewater treatment in industrial plants
An Italian cutting-edge technology company has developed and manufactured an innovative technology system to purify and recover industrial wastewater, based on an electrolytic process using sacrificial electrodes. The company offers either a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a technical cooperation agreement to experienced industrial partners worldwide.
The Italian manufacturing company, based in Lombardy, has developed and manufactured a proprietary technological system to remove metal ions, emulsified oils, bacteria, colloidal substances and other polluting agents (detergents, salts, etc.) from wastewater in industrial plants. Recovered water can be re-used in the process. The electro-flotation process system is based on a particular electrolytic treatment of aqueous solutions, where a set of electrodic and chemical reactions are triggered together with physical processes: the system leads to the removal of polluting agents without any addition of chemicals. Major advantages are a strong reduction of operating and maintenance costs.
The heart of the system is represented by an electrolytic cell into which the solution to be treated is fed. The control system applies an appropriate voltage to the electrodes of the cell system: a metallic cathode (e.g. iron or titanium) and sacrificial anodes in aluminium alloy or other material. The geometry of the cell and that of the electrodes, their number and the sequence of placement depend essentially on the particular characteristics of the solution to be treated and therefore are specifically designed according to each individual case.
The complexity of the phenomena involved can be summarized in three basic steps:
- formation of a coagulating agent through the electrolytic oxidation of the sacrificial electrode, which neutralizes the surface charge, destabilizes the colloidal particles and breaks down emulsions;
- the particles agglutination promoted by the coagulating agent facilitates the formation and growth of flocs;
- generation of oxygen micro-bubbles at the anode and hydrogen micro-bubbles at the cathode, which rise to the surface carrying suspended particles and impurities to the top; this process efficiently promotes the clarification of the effluent.

Floated flakes can be easily separated from the water using conventional methods. Purified water is collected and may be recycled, because its chemical and chemical-physical characteristics allow the immediate reuse:
- reduction of MBAS (Methylen Blue Active Subtances) and BIAS (Bismute Active Subtances) surfactants
- reduction of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand)
- almost total reduction of Phosphates
- removal of oils and separating emulsified
- almost total removal of heavy metals
- abatement of sulphides, nitrite and cyanides
- remarkable bactericidal effect.

The system is fully automated and allows user-friendly enhanced web monitoring. It is also well suited for targeted destruction of organics, bacteria, and other pollutants, usually difficult to be removed in conventional wastewater treatment systems.

The company is looking worldwide either for commercial agreement with technical assistance or for technical cooperation agreement with industrial partners experienced in wastewater treatment processes.
