El sistema cuenta con sensores especiales para medir el tráfico y velocidad de los vehículos que circulan por el lugar de la calzada en el que ha sido instalado el sistema. El instituto busca compañías y ayuntamientos con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia.

A Bulgarian research institute with over 40 years of experience in R-Y-D of specialised technologies and products in collaboration with an SME, has developed an intelligent automated light signalisation system with innovative traffic control and safety capabilities applicable for pedestrian crossings. The institute is seeking to reach license agreements with companies and municipalities.
Description:
The Bulgarian research unit has developed successfully technologies and products together with industrial partners that have applications in different fields: aerospace, new materials and coatings, sensors, control units, automated systems and others. The institute has international experience with R-Y-D institutions and companies.

Pedestrian crossings are designed to keep pedestrians together where they can be seen by drivers and where they can cross most safely across the flow of motor traffic. Sometimes, unsafe conditions exist due to vehicle numbers, speed, lighting, weather conditions or road widths. Ensuring the safety of pedestrians is the main issue to be taken into account in intelligent urban planning when designing crosswalks.

The system developed gives early signalisation to the drivers concerning the presence of pedestrians indicating the direction of crossing even before they have stepped on the roadway.
Every module of the system is a microcomputer which receives command about light intensity from the main computer depending on the illumination of the environment and the transparency of the air. On the basis of the data from the sensors main computer determine, which changes of intensity are necessary during the day and night, when it is raining or snowing or if fog is present. The main computer also determines the speed of the light wave, the period for signaling, etc. The normal work of the mounted light signalization can be controlled via GPRS line in the centre for control and diagnostics of the equipment. When a pedestrian is recognized the main computer sends signals to the light modules, mounted on the roadway, and thus, signalization is generated in the form of running light wave. The recognition of pedestrians in the crossing zone happens with specially designed for the purpose infrared sensors ensuring high reliability of the recognition algorithm. When any of the sensors malfunctions the system switches automatically to emergency mode and indicates the presence of pedestrians on both sides of the roadway to the drivers. The system also has specialised sensors developed to measure the traffic and speed of the vehicles passing on the roadway where the system is mounted.

The institute looking for license agreements with companies and municipalities in order to implement the novel product in traffic systems providing expertise and know-how.
