El sistema, que surge de la investigación en la universidad, se basa en visión artificial y robótica. La tecnología consiste en un aparato que se adapta automáticamente para manejar operaciones de injerto de larvas en apicultura. Mediante una cámara, el sistema es capaz de escanear el panal para identificar las larvas adecuadas. El sistema reduce los costes de la operación de injerto. Description:
A young Italian start-up has developed an automatic system for the increasing of the production of royal jelly. The system developed on this technology consists of an apparatus adapted automatically to handle larvae grafting operations in beekeeping, which is the essential, and most time-consuming operation in royal jelly production.
A prototype is already available for demonstration.
The innovative machine, stemming from university research, is based on artificial vision and robotics. In particular: by way of a camera, the system is able to scan the honeycomb in order to identify the appropriate larvae; image processing procedures are used to detect the perimeters and the centers of the cells and of the larvae in the cells for identifying the good larvae; these larvae are extracted using a manipulator adapted to pick from the cells and to placed into artificial cells.
This apparatus is able to reduce the grafting costs: indeed, the cost of manual grafting technique is about 40% of the total cost for typical royal jelly production.
This innovative system is already patented at national level; patents application for international and European protection are pending.
Partners sought are companies specialized in the extraction of royal jelly, interested in license and commercial agreement with technical assistance in order to adopt this innovative production technology.

- the automation of the grafting procedure allows for double production with same manpower, drastically reducing manual work in the most busy season;
- the low cost of the construction of the apparatus compared to the cost of manual grafting technique;
