Efforts and costs are reduced significantly through considerable extension of maintenance intervals. Description:
Maritime buildings and equipment such as bridges, wind mill foundations, piers, harbour foundations, sea-marks, bouys etc. are located in harsh environments and are affected by strong biological and physical influences. In particular algae growth and permanent seawater exposure are causing adverse and harmful damages on their surfaces. In order to ensure function, operability and safety of the equipment regular and periodic maintenance and service measures are required which are cost-intensive with regard to personnel and machine times. The market for maintenance and service products offers a wide range of solutions, mostly special antifouling paints with low durability or harmful synthetic plastic foils and coatings.
To close this gap the company has developed a textile-based protection material made of pure basalt yarn, which is able to extend the regular cleaning and processing cycles significantly. The basalt thread is processed on knitting machines forming and producing a knitted fabric, which is able to cover and enclose the parts of maritime devices under water. The excellent surface properties of this basalt-based material prevent algae growth and extend the operating life in maritime environment significantly.
Basalt thread is a natural raw material and can be used as a draping and elastic knitted construction for tailor-made protective applications with antibacterial, antimicrobial and high-strength properties. The new material protects the environment from contamination by synthetic materials and offers a wide range of further applications for offshore technologies and seawater structures.
