Un grupo de investigación español ha sintetizado nuevos compuestos para el tratamiento de enfermedades parasitarias, especialmente la enfermedad de Chagas y leishmaniasis. Estos compuestos, patentados a nivel nacional, son menos tóxicos y más baratos de producir y tienen menos efectos secundarios que los medicamentos empleados en la actualidad. El aspecto más novedoso es que estos compuestos son activos para combatir la enfermedad de Chagas en su fase crónica. Se buscan empresas en los sectores farmacéutico/veterinario con el fin de establecer acuerdos de licencia o colaboración técnica.

A Spanish research group has synthesised novel compounds for the treatment of parasitic diseases, especially for Chagas´ disease and leishmaniasis. These compounds, which are patented at National level, are less toxic, cheaper to produce and have fewer side effects than the drugs currently used. The researchers are looking for companies in the pharmaceutical/veterinary sector for licensing agreements or technical collaborations.
Description:
Parasites are the causal agents of a number of serious human diseases, such as Chagas´ disease (caused by Trypanosoma cruzi) and leishmaniasis (caused by Leishmania spp.) which infect millions of people each year. Due to the impact of these parasites on public health and the inadequacy of current treatments, there is an urgent requirement for more effective drugs, since those in use are highly toxic and are ineffective in the chronic phase of the disease. Moreover, the problem is compounded by rise in drug resistance, especially for leishmaniasis.

Spanish Researchers have demonstrated the use of scorpiand-type azamacrocycle compounds for the treatment of parasitic diseases, specifically for Chagas´ disease and leishmaniasis, in vitro and as well in vivo, in mice. The synthesised compounds, which are structurally different from drugs in use, are ten times less toxic and show activity against both, the acute and chronic phases of the infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp.

The main application of the technology is in the pharmaceutical or veterinary area, as pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of human or animal parasitic diseases.
Advantages and Innovations:
The most innovative aspect of these compounds is that they are active in the chronic phase of the Chagas´disease.

The most remarkable advantages provided by this technology are:

- Decrease in price and in the development of side effects due to lower IC50 (drug concentration causing 50% inhibition of the activity) value of the compounds than drugs in use.
- Lower toxicity of the compounds than existing drugs for the treatment of Chagas´ disease and leishmaniasis.
