Un centro de investigación español ha desarrollado una familia de moléculas orgánicas derivadas de 5-bromo-7-azaindol con emisión fluorescente en estado sólido. Debido a estas características, las moléculas pueden emplearse para desarrollar materiales luminiscentes en estado sólido para diversas aplicaciones, como detección, biomédicas, iluminación en estado sólido y dispositivos optoelectrónicos. Los compuestos en estado sólido presentan mayor fluorescencia que en estado de disolución, llegando en algunos casos a ser 25 veces mayor en estado sólido. El centro de investigación busca socios industriales en la industria de OLED y sensores para explotar y desarrollar la patente mediante licencia.

Due to these characteristics, they could be used to develop luminescent materials at solid state for several applications. Industrial partners from the OLED and/or sensor industry are being sought for patent licensing and technology development.
Description:
One of the main fields developed in the recent years is the manufacture of organic luminescent materials, with high light emission at solid state. The aggregation phenomenon known as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is characterized by materials which are barely luminescent in diluted solution while their emission is high when they are at solid state or forming aggregations. A wide variety of molecules, with diverse structures, presenting AIE have been discovered.

The fluorescent systems described are based in 7-azaindole derivatives. In addition, the substitutions introduced in the positions 3 and 5 of the structure favour the emission at solid state through AIE. One of the compounds was found to be 25 times more fluorescent in solid state compared to its emission in solution.
Due to these properties these compounds could be used to develop luminescent materials at solid state for different applications such as detection, biomedical, lightning at solid state and optoelectronic devices.
Industrial partners from sensor industry or OLED developers (OLED materials developers, lightning manufacture, display producers...) are being sought for patent licensing, technology development and commercialization.
Advantages and Innovations:
¿ The procedure to prepare the compounds is simple. The synthetic route has a maximum of 4 steps.
¿ The compounds at solid state present more fluorescence than in solution, achieving in one case 25 times higher in solid state.
¿ The compounds have a strong absorption in the UV-visible region, with extinction coefficients in CH2Cl2 of e = 73250 , 108657 y e = 25217 and 27338 Lmol-1cm-1.
¿ They can be synthesized at large scale and the different derivatives have high stability with decomposition temperatures varying from 248ºC to 298ºC at TG.
